GM closes

GM closes its R&D lab in Bangalore. Approximately 90 researchers, including a few of these who obtained their doctorate in chemical engineering in IISc, were laid off.

"Whereas, the Research and development work in India will be realigned with other global R&D locations, said the source. About 90 R&D workers in India could also be reassigned into other jobs."

It doesn't say they were laid off though. Did you get that from another source, Professor?

Many of them who are working there told me they were laid off. Some were reassigned from R&D to engineering but the profiles are so misfits that they will be laid off later.

That's pretty sad.

GM is on its way down(Bigtime). This thing was expected sooner or later. I hope the people laid off get jobs of similar profiles elsewhere.

Also people looking for jobs must definitely not apply to GM.

GM India showed that it's an American Organization afteral, they really do not care about Human Capital. American companies do not seem to hesitate to follow 'Hire & Fire' policy. Germans are better when comes to policies for Human Resource. Germans have employed their workers for lower days in a month but have not fired, even though it's a worst dip in economy since WWII. One should learn to value Human Capital from Germans.

@Ashish Kulkarni: the Germans do follow a very different social model than the Americans- for one thing, they have better social safety nets. I don't think we can expect this from the US anytime soon, what with their vicious politics.

This should also be a spur to us to develop more indigenous jobs in research (not to mention everything else).

'This should also be a spur to us to develop more indigenous jobs in research (not to mention everything else).'

If we don't do this we will never improve financially/technologically.

This just shows as long as we depend on foreigners for our existence we are in a precarious position. This news does not come as a surprise at all. Be it Americans or Germans, to us they are all foreigners, as long as we need a VISA to get to these places, we don't have the right to comment on their moral turpitude. Moral of the story: Build our own stuff.

Instead of building our own stuff we give respect to people to do an 'MBA' after a 'BTech' and end up either selling soap or doing gambling with peoples assets in international and national banks.
A career in research, technology, or anything to do with innovation is looked down upon in India.

I for one am not shedding any tears. GM ISL was headed by a despot who made ISL his own personal fiefdom and the employees were thrown up or down the ladder based on loyalty to him than anything related to merit.

I am sorry that close to 90 engineers are losing their jobs. I know what these people are going through but quite frankly, ISL was taken down a horrible road minus the vision. Thank God it was euthanised.
