Outsourced grading

Papers are uploaded to Bangalore for grading...
One way to improve the writing skills of undergraduates is to make them write more. But as each student in her course in business law and ethics at the University of Houston began to crank out—often awkwardly—nearly 5,000 words a semester, it became clear to her that what would really help them was consistent, detailed feedback.

this could spell doom for future graduate students looking for funding.

Hello all,

I had applied for an AP position in IIT Kanpur. The last date for submitting the application was 20th Dec. 2009.
I am writing to ask if anyone has received the interview call letter against this adv. in IITK. I am yet to hear anything from there and when I asked the HOD about my application status, he also didn't reply. The case could be either I was not shortlisted for the interview, or the selection process had not started yet. If anyone of you has received the interview call letter, please let me know so that it could become clear.
Thank you in advance.

J.

Dear J.,
Have patience, you will know yes or no "SOON". Its only been four months since the deadline.

Dear K.,

Thank you for this information. However, when you see the other IITs where the closing date was around same (or even later), they have already completed this process. So an applicant who had applied to more than one IIT (including IITK), is still in dark as far as IITK's decision is converned. On the other hand, he/she may already have the offer from another IIT. Don't you think it matters?

J,you say
"when I asked the HOD about my application status, he also didn't reply."

What do you mean? He hung up when you called and asked?

Many HODs are unfamiliar with something known as email and it is better to call them.

I obviously meant that the HOD didn't reply to my email. Perhaps now I should call to ask about the same.

Recently I have heard of a case when one the HODs from IIT shouted at the prospective faculty: "why are you calling me". And of course it is true many HODs are not very email friendly.

Dear J,

Just call the HOD and ask about the status of you application for the position. If he shouts on you (as TA seems to be suggesting) then that place may not be the place where you would like to spend the next 30 years or so of your life.

Besides that keep applying to other places and do your homework about these places. Applying for an AP position in India is not so much different than in US. You have to network, network, and network (e.g., going to the right conferences)!

There are several cases where the candidate is hired by HOD of A (even on the spot), but never gets a simple email from HOD of B. Even if A is several times better than B.

IIT K may take some more time to answer. Just wait - the shortlisting of all candidates may not yet be completed. Too many may have applied. Recently I went for a selection of a lecturer in a state university and for the one reserved post 163 applicants had sent in their application and they all had to be screened before the shortlist for interview. Patience is a virtue one needs to inculcate if one wants to teach in india.
