Ph.inisheD.

The above is the caption of the T-shirt featured under the column "Impressive Ph.D stories" The author concludes that the following are the keys to the success for finishing the doctorate quickly and effectively.

  • Always meet and report your work to your supervisor. At least once a week.
  • Set a goal and reason why you want to complete your Ph.D. That will drive and motivate you to finish your study.
  • Publish your work in reputable journals with impact factors. That's like an insurance policy during the VIVA.
I would just add a rider to point #1, which my advisor told me,  "Give the progress and what you want to do in writing. What you say and what I hear may be completely different :-)"

What about the advise you give?

"Set some reasonable goals with deadlines and share it with the advisor"

"Show an ability to work on multiple projects and write up the results quickly"

Prof. Giridhar,

Do advisors really have the time to look at students weekly progress reports?

In IIT Patna there is an age limit for taking admission into their PhD program(Engineering). It is 28 years for BE/BTech and 32 years for M.E MTech.
Should there be any upper age limit for the PhD program?

Dear Prof. Madras

if a student do the experiment, analysis results and finally wrote a paper with in 2-3 months and then gave it to his guide, and then guide will sit over it for 1-2 YEARS(this situation is in IISc, but not for all prof.), in that situation how can a student finish his degree with in limited timeframe !!
