IISc admissions

Please read this post and comments before posting.

For the research (Ph.D/M.Sc) program, interview letters were posted on the website on May 10, interviews are from 1 June to 7 June and offer letters will be online on June 15.

For the UG program, the first round of offers based on KVPY was made on May 8 and the second round of offers based on JEE will be made later. The first counselling will be on May 24 followed by the next in the last week of June.

I have received enquires about the 30-40% reduction in research admissions to IISc this year. While this has been attributed to the lack of hostel accommodation, IISc has maintained the ME numbers and even operated waiting lists to fill up the ME quota. Therefore, I do not think this is a hostel problem but more of a policy decision to admit less doctoral students this year. I only execute matters as an administrator and do not interfere in policy matters. Bottom line: Do not ask me about this.

The research interviews are conducted differently in each department and it is difficult to generalize. Some departments have two rounds of interviews, some have a written test followed by an interview. Many interview committees will ask you two or three subjects that you liked in your undergraduation and ask you several questions based on that subjects. The emphasis will be on testing the depth of candidate’s understanding of fundamental concepts. Never attempt to answer questions in which you do not know the correct answer. It is okay to say that you have never heard of such a principle or law. Because the emphasis is on fundamentals rather on memory, it will be always be appreciated if the student says that he can derive the equation but can not recall it from memory. For Ph.D students, expect some questions on the project done during the masters. The problems you faced executing the projects, the principles you learned in that project and how you think the project helped you overall.

Post queries here and they will be answered, if possible.

Dear Sir,

Could you please let us know what are the criteria for shortlisting of M.E/M.Tech without GATE score for PhD admission?is GATE mandatory for all?

Giri@iisc said...

Shortlisting for ph.d admission for candidates with me/mtech is done by criteria that differs in each department. GATE score is not mandatory. Many departments keep 75% in B.Tech or some % in M.Tech for shortlisting.

The second list has already been dispatched. It is unlikely a third list will be operated.

This applies to all departments in IISc and I do not know anything specific to chemical engineering.

Thanks

Dear Sir,

I have a question regarding Ph.d through ERP. I understand that 2 guides are required. 1 guide from IISc and 1 from the organisation. Can the guide from organisation be located in a different country?

Thanks,

Good evening, sir. I'm a KVPY SA Stream 2011 scholar. I applied through the KVPY channel for the UG program, and I've received the offer letter for counselling at IISc. I also got 326/360 in JEE Main. Can I apply through the JEE Main channel as well?

Giri@iisc said...

You have been offered through KVPY. If you do not attend the counselling, you will not be offered again.

Dear Sir,
Your blog is very interesting and educative. As regards BS admissions based on JEE MAIN score is concerned, it seems, the IISc is considering only the JEE MAIN Entrance score and not the final rank of JEE MAIN inclusive of 40% weightage. As you would be knowing this year all NITs etc. admit students based on JEE Main rank which is prepared taking 40% weightage of normalised Board's marks in to consideration. And students prepare accordingly, giving equal importance to both. If IISc takes only the JEE MAIN entrance score it will put the students who give equal importance to their Board exam at a disadvantage when compared with those, who concentrate only on JEE MAIN neglecting their Board exam, for the purpose of offering BS seats. The JEE MAIN exam thus include enrance as well as Board's marks and this can't be compartmentalised in the backdrop of this year's scenario. Kindly think over this and do the needful. Thank you sir.

I passed out of BE 11 yrs ago. I am working in the IT sector and I have a comfortable life. But my passion lies with Science.. Due to personal reasons, I was unable to pursue higher education in science all this while. But now I am thinking of taking the GATE 2014 with an aim of Mtech in IISc. Are there such aged students like me in Mtech class? I am also worried that I have lost touch with my engineering subjects in so long ... in any case let me give GATE a shot and try. Please let me know your thoughts.

Why write in SMS language? It is disrespectful. If you have got an interview call from energy, attend it..why ask about your other departments??

How does age matter? They are 40 year olds studying in IISc.

Please can you tell me how to prepare? what to prepare and how the interview will be? As in will there be multiple rounds? What sort of questions will be asked? Anxiously waiting for your reply

Chances of getting admitted through JEE are less. The last round of KVPY offers will be made in July and you may have a chance then.

Dear Sir, For the UG program in IISC, based on JEE Main 2013 and JEE Adv. Any chance of extending the dead line for applications. Pl. give one more chance of one week, so that many students will be benefitted…. Thank you…..C.V.Rao

Rao-ji:

The deadline was April 30. How will extending it by one week help you? You want it extended by 1 month and 1 week..

Also, who is Dr. Giridhar to extend deadlines etc..he is trying to help you but people like you make outrageous comments that would stop people helping you.

Respected Sir,
Is there any chance of getting admission in BS course based on NEET All India Rank 9922 [Category (General) Rank 6246)- percentile score - 98.4919. Very kind of you sir.

Respected sir,
I got 456 marks in NEET - UG entrance and belong to GEN category. Can I get admission in undergraduate (BS) course at IISC based on my NEET score ? I have completed my class XII with MBiPC group and already applied to BS Course.
Thank you sir.

Anonymous said...

Sir,
Students from Andhra Pradesh do not figure in NEET Main merit list as they are not eligible for all India 15% quota seats. Further, this year CBSE has announced NEET all India Rank which is more comprehensive and covers all students who wrote NEET entrance exam (unlike main merit list which doesn't take into consideration students from AP and J&K). You have any idea, therefore, whether the all india rank / NEET marks are considered for admission to BS Course instead of main merit list of AIPMT considered hitherto.

Respected sir,i have applied for BS THROUGH NEET AND MY PERCENTILE IS 85.9. AND HAVE BEEN QUALIFIED BY 236 MARKS.MY AIR IS 90 THOUSAND AND AIR CATEGORY(GEN) IS 50 THOUSAND. WILL I GET SELECTED FOR THE COURSE?????????PLEASE LET US KNOW THE LIST SOON SIR SO THAT WE DECIDE OUR FUTURE......HOPING FOR THE BEST ...
THANK YOU SIR

236 marks in NEET and admission to IISc?? you must be joking.

To join IISc, you will need at least 550.
