3M

The Indian cricket team wins at 3Ms (Motera, Mohali and Mumbai) to lift the world cup. Congratulations to the Indian cricket team. They do it for Sachin. Dhoni proves why he is the one of the best captains in the world - wins the world cup, T20, champions league, IPL... and leads India to #1 in both ODI and test cricket.

Like the indian team can we also proove ourselves in research. Is it possible? I think iisc has the ability to do it. with the nanocentre, serc, and many other interdisciplinary centres I think we can make it.. it would be computing, nanotechnology, neuroscience or any other field.. we have to make it

Is India #1 in ODIs as well?
See http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/match_zone/team_ranking.php

I am so glad that since we are
"world champions" now, there won't be any poverty, corruption and unemployment in India any more. Congratulations to one and all!!!

We are not #1 in the official ICC ODI Rankings. Australia remains number 1 there. But if we keep playing like we did in the World Cup, we should be there very soon.

Thanks for correcting me. I heard (after the match) that India was #1 in ODI based on the number of points. This statement is correct. Apparently, India is #1 on points but #2 on ratings.

Thanks

Certainly, we can prove ourselves in research like the Indian team. We have a proven track record (an enviable one indeed) and continue to prove in research - among SAARC countries.

SAARC....ha ha...we are way behind in research than US and Japan. Even singapore which got independence after our freedom is now considered to be best in research. 60 years since independence .. no Nobel..no ranking of institutes in top 10..not even iisc... no law(like Newton's law) after any indian scientist(except 1 effect which is named after a professor of IISc.)In India there is no semiconductor foundry, no high performance supercomputer, no major commercial R& D labs..forget about robotics. Even a poor farmer in a remote village of Jharkhand would try to send his son to study abroad saying India mein kuch nahi rakha... Sorry Prof. Giri I dont want to hurt you just wanted to know answer to this question so that I can reply to all those people who suggest me to give GRE rather than GATE.

anon above: I know several Indian faculty members who left IITs/IISc to join universities in Singapore. The salaries are comparable to what they would make in US universities or the industry.

Can we pay market salaries to IIX faculty? If you pay peanuts, you will get monkeys. And some dedicated people, who don't care about money, and usually their family members also call them monkeys for that reason.

its not about money or peanuts. basically indians dont support innovation. The faculty here hardly gets freedom to pursue research.they do the projects given to them by DST/DRDO/ISRO etc. Nobody tries to explore new ideas new thoughts breaking the boundries of Science, Engineering Arts and Humanities. Interdisciplinary courses are the least prefferd among the GATE qualified engineers. These so called 'theorotical' engineers would never try to explore something which is not available in the markets. They can never get their ideas done. When they go foreign universities they complain that they dont get innovative projects as they are not of that country. And it is the student group in the age group of 20-30 who has the capability to think and innovate and bring Indian research to a respectable level. But here even those students want to do ME/M.Tech/MS for job. Phd students want to do their Phd for get a Lecturer or Professor post in their home-town so that they can finally get married and get settled. Indian prefer carrer as a tool to get 'settled' somewhere but the fact is carrer is the 'beginning' of ones life. For this reason we dont have companies like google born in the land of India. In short Indians lack those Innovators or even if they are there they are not properly connected with the main stream.

This is somthing which is going out of the topic. Sir simply wanted to express his happiness after India won the world cup. No need to discuss the topic of India in research over here. There are many reasons for poor research in India and the major one is the economy. Research is not simply getting bat, ball and stumps and start practising. It needs lots of money and leaders, enterpreneurs, politicians and philanthropists who think it as necessary to invest in research. Americans have well developed economy and so even a common man can invest in building some gadget or make something from basic science. So is their mentality. If Indian economy is good enough we too can think innovative things. Industries need to be developed in the field of high technology which needs lots of investment and if industries come up so too will academics in different parts of india. Geographical diversity, lack of proper circulation of money among various states, people demanding socialism, etc. are other factors. Overall we need role models in research who can inspire like the way Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar changed the game of cricket. If this person thinks he can be that role model he should try hard for that rather than simply complaining about things being wrong. Remember 'Practise before you preach'.

I must venture to say that it is entirely possible now that India dominates the world of cricket of some time. In comparison in the 90's India played horrid, forgettable cricket - and it took geniuses like Tendulkar or work-horses like Kumble to pull of victories.

The (a) general inflow of capital, (b) openness towards foreign inputs (can you believe there was a the time when foreign coaches were taboo!) and (c) the celebration of special individuals has helped us rise to this level. The IPL is but another step in this process that has widened the monetary safety net to a larger set of players. Thanks to this more young boys will be willing to take the risk of a career in sport, even those interested in test cricket.

If something analogous to (a,b,c) above is done to the Indian higher education system, there too we will see India rise to a higher level. Currently higher education is in the state Indian cricket was in the 90s, where we are reliant on people like CNR Rao or Ashoke Sen (or people from the past like Ramanujan, Aryabhatta etc) to derive our pride from.
