Awarding degrees

Professor Dheeraj Sanghi writes about the new IITs and how they are not eligible to award degrees in 2012 if the bill is not passed in the Parliament. I do not understand why the new IITs should award degrees for the batch graduating in 2012. IISER graduated a batch last year and they did not award any degrees but I am sure that the students are doing fine. They are also not eligible to award degrees because the NIT amendment bill has not been passed by the Parliament. However, you can be assured that the government is working hard to get this bill passed soon, maybe in the next couple of years. I think we place too much importance on awarding degrees.

Of course, I am being sarcastic.

I remember an MP asking the speaker to clarify whether MPs are 'public' servants or 'government' servants. So, MPs want to be dead sure of their status, while ignoring all other aspects of their job.

And they seem to be least worried of students who are right now stuck with provisional degrees and which can be a critical aspect in deciding the future career of these students.

MPs are not government servants. Therefore, they are allowed to fly private airlines but we can not.

Because all AI flights from Bangalore to Chennai have been cancelled, if we have to fly from Bangalore to Chennai, we have to fly from Bangalore to Mumbai and then Mumbai to Chennai.

A minister is a busy man, where is the time to sign a few degrees?

i don't know what is worse,

a minister who doesn't award the much needed degrees to the graduates, or the medical or the doctors who threaten to go on strike by shutting down the ICU and emergency services, letting people die because they do not have degrees.

India will see little progress in the future. that is for certain

All great comments about India, like the previous one, come from the Indians abroad showing us the mirror and making us realize that India is destined to be doomed. I wonder how many of such people even think of doing something constructive for the betterment of India.

On a slightly related note..How do you (professors) handle applications from students of unrecognized institutes like Amity?

Well, I guess there is no need to take flights from Bangalore to Chennai. It hardly takes 6 hrs to go to
chennai by Road, and I guess it takes 3 to 4 hrs by Plane considering the ravel to and from airport to the city. SO, I think Air India was wise in Cancelling these flights. and we are not very busy Profs
