No laptops

The Indian Institute of Technology - Kharagpur has decided to scrap the controversial proposal to provide laptops to its faculty under a government scheme. The Cumulative Performance Development Allowance (CPDA) scheme provides Rs 3 lakh to each faculty member for the period of September 2008 to September 2011. In IISc, I think this money can not be used to buy a computer or laptop and can be used only for travel or consumables. Most of the experimentalists like me find this money useful when they run out of project money for a short while.

How does this CPDA grant work in cases of faculty joining in the middle or towards the end of the 3 year cycle? To be specific, I may join IISc or one of IIXs by July 2011. Do I get full or partial amount for the cycle that ends in Sept 2011? Thanks in advance for your response.

Dear prospective,

The scheme varies by Institute. IISc uses a common 3 year slab (like for LTC). IITM uses individualized slabs, starting in Jan or July of the year in which the faculty member joined. So, you will have to check with the IIX in question as to what is their version.

In Madras, one is not allowed to procure consumable from CPDA. Equipment are allowed.

I have seen a mention of a "sliding" block of time for which some grants are provided. What does the sliding block here mean?
