Admissions - 2011

I have been receiving several queries on both UG and PG admissions. Here is the status.

UG: (BS)

Additional offers have been made based on performance in KVPY-SA (2009) and KVPY-SX (2010) examinations. From the KVPY-SX stream, offers have been made to all general category applicants with ranks of upto 209.
From the JEE stream, offers have been made to all general category applicants with ranks of upto 504.
Under AIEEE, offers have been made to all general category applicants with ranks of upto 248.

Emails and letters by speed post will be sent to all the selected candidates by this evening (June 15).

PG: M.Sc (Engg) and Ph.D

Many departments must have announced their provisional selection lists either on the notice board or on the web site or by both. The reason this is called provisional is because we have verify your certificates. In the case of PG admissions, no formal letters will be sent by email or speed post. Please log on to the iisc admission website and get your official offer letter printed out. The offer letters should be online by Saturday evening, if not, definitely by Monday evening (June 20).

Good luck and best wishes for your studies in IISc.

Dear Sir,
when will be the result announced for P.hd programme? I have given interview for the material research centre dept. on 11th june.

Anonymous said...

You mean June at all the places you mentioned July!!? :)

Anonymous said...

Hello Sir,
No results have been made available on the website yet. You mean all departments have already displayed their provisional lists on the notice board? I've appeared for M.Sc(Engg.) in Mechanical & Aerospace.

Giri@iisc said...

Some departments have put it in the notice board; some have put it in the website.

The official results will be announced on our admissions web site on Monday (July 20).
No, June 20.

Sorry, that I have been making the mistake of thinking it is July already. I wish it was so.

Today it is found that Academic section has X candidate on their list for a particular department, while the same departmental shortlisted (many of them published online/notice board) Y candidates (Y>X). What will happen to those Y-X candidates?

Respected Sir,
The list of the selected applicants for research (Center for NanoScience and Engineering) has not been publish in web. I don't know if it has been put up in notice board. When is it going to be put up in web? Thank you sir.

what the chances of getting selected through a waiting list?

Giri@iisc said...

All offer letters have been sent by email and also available on the web. The list has also been displayed in the notice board of the admission section. This is the final selection list and supersedes anything put up by the department.

respected sir,
what are my chances of getting offer letter for M.Sc through a waiting list in Mechanical Dept?

Anonymous said...

Dear Sir,
I would like to know if we could directly apply for Phd without doing M.Tech or is M.Tech a must for Phd ?

Giri@iisc said...

Please read the admission brochure. We allow for direct Ph.D's after B.Tech, without a M.Tech, in engineering departments. You do not need to qualify in any exam.

Sir, what is the possibility of my getting call for counseling for BS 2011? My AIEEE AIR rank (gen) is 21871. Thanks.

Sir, total how many candidates have accepted the BS Course? How many seats are still left in General Category (Non-KVPY)

Anonymous said...

Sir,
What are the rank cutoffs based on JEE-2011 for the next counselling session. This information has not yet been updated on the website.
Also, is this the last counselling session?

Giri@iisc said...

We will put up the cutoffs in each category for UG in the website soon.

Thanks for the reply.

Why JEE cut-off remained at 504 in GEN category? Is it that JEE Cut-off shall not increase now? And Sir, how many seats are still left to be filled? I think IISc had 30 % reservation in seats for KVPY students i.e. 18 seats. 295 Offers for 18 seats show that not so many are accepting offers. Sir, if it is true, then your process is very slow. Like you jumped in other categories (SC, ST), you should have jump also in general category so students (at least upto 25000 ranks) can decide whether to wait for IISc or take admission in BIT, NITs, IIITs...

Sir, I will be obliged if you reply with detailed explanation. Thank You Sir.

Anonymous said...

The cut-off on JEE(General) was 504 last time also. Does this mean no new offers are going to be given to general category aspirants based on JEE?

"you should have jump also in general category so students (at least upto 25000 ranks)"

How can one do that? The number of offers made is made on the number of candidates who have applied to the program. For example, there are around 3000 general candidates between the rank of 2 to 25,000 in AIEEE. Do you want us to make 3000 offers? In other categories, it also depends on the number of seats available and the number of applicants.

Thanks

Giridhar

Anonymous said...

Sir, but why have no new offers based on JEE been made for the general category?
Have all the seats allocated on JEE-General been exhausted?
And also, is this the last counselling session?

Anonymous said...

Sir, 3000 is not too much. Your process is ultra slow. Keep it online. Like you give list of candidates till some cut-off (At least, till those candidates who can take NITs i.e. 25k AIR) on the web. Those who want to accept BS UG Course will tick mark that "I will be present at counselling" and those who don't want to attend it will put "Cross". Like this 3000 will reduce to 1000 and among remaining candidates you call them to Banglore. Be fast, in short terms. So that we can decide whether to prefer other good colleges or not.

And, why JEE General candidates after 504 are not sent offers? What cut-off does IISc accept? Will this be the last counselling?

Anonymous said...

The above request is certainly thinkable. If IISc will continue in such a way then all those good candidates who want to join it will shift in NITs, BITs, IIITs, etc. After that IISc will have to select from remaining ones. Handling of 16k offers is not a big problem. Sending offers to first 25k students is a good idea.

And number of seats i.e. 110 - 120 will be remained fixed or they may increase on basis of response you get. Sir, how many seats are vacant now? And if you don't get enough category students, will you turn them to General category seats?

Anonymous said...

Do not advise the professor how to offer seats to candidates. He has handled admissions for PG for several years and also UG now.

IF you think IISc is ultra slow and is not efficient, why do you want to join this institute?

IISc will not admit candidates (in general category) below all india rank of 1000 for JEE or AIEEE. That is the reality. Do not worry too much, we will fill up our seats based on these cut offs.

Giri@iisc said...

"Handling of 16k offers is not a big problem. Sending offers to first 25k students is a good idea."

You may say it is not a big problem. I do not think so. Hypothetically, let us assume we want to select 10 candidates from AIEEE. Then, why should we make 3000 offers (or 16k offers, as you say) up to 25,000 rank. We will fill it up with candidates with ranks below 1000, or even 500.

For an overall number of seats of 100-120 (or around 50-60 for general category), I am surprised that people are suggesting we make 16k offers !

Further, I am not obligated to answer all questions posed here.
I am not the deciding authority for selection of faculty or students. If you have a grouse regarding the selection or the mode of selection or that it is ultra slow, take it up elsewhere.

Thanks

I read the exchange of comments. Interesting. I am tempted to post my observations. I am a chartered accountant and uninterested party in the entire exercise of IISc UG. Accidentally few days back, I came across this but then I checked IISc website, tried inquiry no & email for UG admission to get response but failed EVERY time. Both are simply unreachable.

1. Students feel;

a) that the delay can and could have been avoided if higher nos of offers were sent

b) that more transparency and disclosure of status of cumulative seats taken up and still open for admission should be there because

c) though they WANT to join IISC UG, other choices may be getting filled up - it is July - and parents/other factors may be compelling them to accept alternatives where fees have to be paid and hence they wish to know about possibility of admission in IISC UG. If admission is offered after they paid fee somewhere else, it may not be affordable expense.

d) that main inquiry no and email for this are non reachable

2. Students may appreciate that

a) This suspense is at the root of their frustration for which this blog which they have found, has become an outlet as official contacts are not contactable and they are anxious, under pressure but young.

b) On the other hand students should appreciate that this is first time exercise for IISc for UG admission and they may want to keep cut off at the highest possible level in tune with this august & apex status (that is why you all are eager to get admission there!!). There is no past trend/benchmark to fall back upon, for this process. It is time to be patient.

c) Professor has tried to respond to this frustration but it is the system/organization and not professor who is conducting admission process. This shift of quarries to his blog from given contact no./email is taking its toll.

3. Sir, as a constructive measure and to the extent possible (which I am sure you would have already done), I request you to use your good offices to at least make both phone and email contact reachable/ respond to applicants and make some more details available to applicants.

Sir, Institutions like IISc, IITs do very good job of imparting top notch education in the country and hence are coveted but sometime it is not possible for them to guage level of sheer pressure, frustration
and financial burden and sacrifices students and parents have sustained for years to reach this stage. If not admission, some information will go a long way to alleviate these anxiety etc them undergo and hence this request. Teachers are next to parents in a student's life and can best appreciate this humanitarian angle than anyone else.

Sorry for this lengthy comment and if I have hurt anyone's feelings.
Thanks

Giri@iisc said...

What you say is very correct. But I can assure that I respond to all the reasonable comments that I can. I will try to answer all queries but do not expect that I can/should answer ALL queries.

As a guideline, I can tell that we are unlikely to offer to JEE and AIEEE candidates (general category) whose rank is below 1000. The current cutoff is around 500 and it may stay that way if enough candidates come for the counselling on July 13. Even if many do not come, the cutoffs may not come down below 1000. But use it only as a guideline. Depending on the number of candidates who come on July 13, this may be the last counselling session for general candidates. At least that what I think.

Based on government rules, it is NOT possible to convert SC/ST seats to general seats if candidates are not available. In that case, the total number of students may be less than 100-120.

Best wishes,

Giridhar

Sir,
What happens if a student commits in the counselling session that he is willing to join IISc, but later fails to do the same for whatever reason...will his seat be offered to the next eligible candidate or will the programme continue with less students?
Yes,sir for 100-120 seats ranks should be generally below ~500 or 1000, but my point is that in the last session also 504 was the cutoff and in this too. This would imply that all seats based on JEE have been filled. Is it so?
And I think since this is the first year of the programme, delays are to be expected. IISc could have (just to get an idea) used the JEE rank-cutoffs on admission to the various MSc integrated programmes for the past years...
As an example, to fill a total of 14 general category seats...students with ranks as high as 2700 could accept admission to the 4-year B.S. Programme (Same as IISc) in Physics at IIT-Kanpur this year.
It is sad, that science courses are not that "popular" among (to be) UG students in India.
I understand that IISc probably deserves candidates that are in the top slab of such examinations (with ranks not more than 100 in the future, I hope)..but since this is the first year, I think to deny an opportunity to a candidate with an interest in science and also a decent enough JEE rank is sad.

Anonymous said...

"the first year, I think to deny an opportunity to a candidate with an interest in science and also a decent enough JEE rank is sad."

How is this happening? If enough candidates below 1000 accept the offers, IISc should continue to offer seats to lower ranked candidates??

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous at 2:59pm
Yes, I absolutely agree with the pressure from parents and all...
Especially, for JEE selected candidates (and even more so, with ranks<504)
It is very difficult to convince parents to take a non-engineering branch in an IIT itself (Engineering Physics, B.Tech is fine but Physics,B.S. is silly!..even though the courses are almost the same), and to convince them of going to say, even IISc, is almost impossible after getting such good ranks...
This is indeed sad, and I hope this changes in the coming years (also I hope this IISc UG programme plays a part)

Anonymous said...

Anonymous @ 5:27pm

Yes, of-course if the seats get filled then its great, just in-case they do not. (Since no new offers were made this time based on JEE)

Anonymous said...

This admission procedure by IISc is slightly flawed. But that now it is in place, nothing can be done this year to change anything.

Consider the following scenario, many candidates who have secured ranks between 4000-6000 in JEE may want to join the BS program. Because the BS program application of IISC closed before the JEE exam, they must have 500 or even 1000 applicants who have qualified between JEE rank 1 to 4000. Therefore, if they have to make an offer to someone ranked 4050, they have to offer all the 1000 applicants ranked higher than him. In this only 5 may join, but as an institution they may not be able to make 1000 offers for 10 seats.

The best procedure that they should adopt is to have the admission application form close after JEE results are announced. That is open the application on July 1 and close on July 15. Only interested candidates will apply and they will apply with JEE/AIEEE/AIPMT rank and IISc can select from the top rankers of each exam. It is likely that only interested people will apply.

Jsut my 2 cents

Tell the Dean of UG to raise BS seats so that at least students upto 25k GE AIR in AIEEE can get admission there.... We all are really interested in IISc Research.. Not like rankers, looking for high salaries and nothing else... If you take rankers this year, IISc too will become commercial like IITs...

"Tell the Dean of UG to raise BS seats so that at least students upto 25k GE AIR in AIEEE"

Is the professor your servant that he should carry your message to the Dean? Why don't you do it yourself?

@ anonymous:
Its pitiable that people think researchers dont get high salaries. If you are really interested in IISc research then try again with a good rank in the entrance exam. Dont bring down the level of IISc. The BS program is for those who can make a carrer in research and hence make Indian research a mainstream carrer like MBA, Engineering, CA, Law etc.

Anonymous said...

@Rahul
I agree that a few silly mistakes cost more than it should ideally, but I think the IISc offers admission through so many streams that if you really are deserving, you'll be able to get through.

Anonymous said...

but if seats are not filled or if seats are booked by students who do not finally join then considering both cases....if possible one should go at least upto 2500-3000 rank...

Anonymous said...

Yes, that is what I too am worried about.
Because if at IIT's similar programmes are filled at ranks 2500-3000 then I doubt if IISc will be able to fill seats within 1000 ranks in it's first year.
Either way, students in the top 1000 will commit to both IIT and IISc, on being offered admission and these seats will go empty when classes finally start.

@Danish

You should go for BITS, Pilani. IISc has just started its BS from this year. For PG, placement of IITs, BITS are more than IISc. So, definitely UG of these colleges will be far better than IISc. Moreover, pure science has not much scope in jobs. Be engineering. I recommend everybody to leave BS for sake of B.Tech, B.E.

Anonymous said...

If you like science, you should definitely join BS. In terms of going abroad and research opportunities, BS will be much much better. However, if you want to take a mundane job, engineering will be better.

@Danish

before going to BITS pilani, you just goto IISc physics website and jsut see the faculty profile... Just a reco from any of them after four years of your BS will take you to the so called very best places in the world for your higher studies. Do not miss this chance of getting into IISc for BS. I would say you are very lucky that you have this opportunity. It is going to be really tough in a few years. People at IISc they dont even care about placements because after their association with IISc, they understand that they just woudn want to end up with a coding job, but to do a research work with very high impact. Yes, IISc has all the problems that of a govt institution. Its process is slow. But the faculty here is really really smart. They are very good at research...They publish their work in only top journals. They get respect in academic circle all over the world...after all they have contacts with top researchers all over the world. That is the differenciating factr b/w IISc and any other institution in India.
