IISc Admissions 2012

I have been receiving several queries on admissions to IISc. Unfortunately, I am unable to answer all emails individually. All I can say that the cutoffs for the M.E. program are usually in the 99th percentile. The last year cutoff score in GATE and other national exams for various categories to be called for interview for the Ph.D program is mentioned in the website and use this as a guideline. Emails to me regarding this year cutoffs will not help because cutoffs are decided by the number of students applying.

Update: Interview call letters for the M.Tech/M.Mgt program was posted on the website on March 30. M.E. admission is not by interview and only through GATE score. The admission letters for ME will be posted around April 20 on April 12. There are no waiting lists for ME admission, though second lists are operated occasionally. The admission is based on a ratio of offered to joining based on the experience of the last few years. For the research program, interview letters will be posted by May 12, interviews are from 1 June to 10 June. The offer letters for the research program will be online by June 18. For the UG program, the first round of offers will be made by May 15 and the second round of offers will be made on June 1.

Hello Sir,
please tell me what type of job opportunities are there after a MSc(engg) in IISc in Materials dept??
PhD is better than MSc in case of research but I also want to earn money as early as possible...
please guide me..

Dear Anonymous @ March 17, 2012 7:26 AM,

Then go for some software/call center job now itself than wasting your time and professor's time.

I am not qualified in GATE. Am I eligible for admission to IISc in ME or MSc or PhD programmme

@March 17, 2012 9:48 AM

that's a harsh reply. i get annoyed when pseudo iisc intellectuals answer queries such as job prospects from prospective students with replies such as join software/join call centre etc.

why are there thousands of replies to the prospective faculty threads. why not use the same reply there as if you are only interested in a job, join software forget research, etc.

i guess there are 2 diff rules for profs and for students.

if one doesn't know about the prospective job opportunities in dept X , field Y then one must keep his/her mouth shut. if one does know about the job prospects, then it is better to share with the inexperienced prospective students.

@ March 17, 2012 3:36 PM,

yoi missed the point made by Anonymous (@March 17, 2012 9:48 AM).
If you join MSc progam you will be making 8000 for next 2 years. If you are lucky, you may end up with a journal paper and get out of IISc with flying colors.
If not you will be struck with same prof for some more time. Meanwhile your batchmates from undergrad will be making tons of money in IT job.
Also, I have also seen cases where after masters from IIT/IISc people have joined IT field which has little (almost nothing) to do with training during masters program. Such an approach will be loss to student, faculty and government (money as well as effort).

Dear anon, theres almost no campus placements after msc. Ask anyone of your iisc friends about placements in materials this time. I can tell you that its too bad and an off campus research job is almost impossible. You will be forced to convert to phd after msc thats it. If you think you are really smart then you think about joining iisc. Not mugging books but to find a job.. else you join IT. Ultimately it doesnt make a difference. Job satisfaction and related things are lame concepts. If you are paid, you will be forced to struggle... it really doesn make a diff if you have a bettr degree fronlm a place like iisc

the usual responses from the insiders in IIX when prospective students ask questions such as what are the job prospects and salary expected after a masters or a PhD from an IIX the usual responses are that if you are interested in money join IT or do MBA. an even better response is that IIX are great institutions and once you enter into the hallowed portals of an IIX one need not worry about things like jobs.

a better approach would be if things like job prospects and expected salaries after a degree from IISc or elsewhere is made open knowledge. then cases of students joining IISc and getting into IT or doing an MBA later can be avoided and thus government funds efforts from both the profs and students can be saved.

i can think of the following cases as prospects for a student graduating from an IIX.
1) there are many jobs in the government sector, academia and in the private sector. usually means high paying jobs available in private sector.
2) there are many jobs in academia, but fewer jobs in government sector and private sector.
3) jobs available only in academia, and some few government sectors.
4) jobs available only in academia.

these cases usually mean that there isn't a drastic change in the field of work from what studies the student pursued during his/her program at IIX to his expected job.

of course the various engineering depts and science streams can be allocated into either of the 4 categories but things aren't so simple either. pursuing research in a field F1 can be much more rewarding monetarily and in terms of job offers than pursuing research in the field F2, even though F1 and F2 may belong to the same dept.

such specific information may be difficult to produce even by the profs and students at IISc. however information on general trends can be given, and it is up to the prospective students to make their career choices.

funny thing is that things like travel allowance, medical allowance blah blah are discussed into the hundreds in terms of replies in the prospective faculty threads.

Mr. Giri. The Site says 21st March is the last date for online submission of application forms. But it seems they have closed the site at 12 midnight 20th March. I have done everything even finished submitting my M.Tech form. But my research form is pending(Although the application fee payment is all done). I was sure I could submit it on 21st. But the entry to the site is blocked. I am almost devastated. I have prepared for GATE for a year, I score a decent rank-(328 in EE, Gate Score 737). And I log in at 00:02, 21st March to apply and it says 'No Access'. Could you tell me what to do next. If there is something I could do. The site clearly says the last date to apply online is 21st March( no Before 21st March or anything of that sort). I request you to kindly help me out here as I have been looking forward to this Research Program for a year.

Sir when will the interview call letters come for ME and MSc?

Anonymous said...

Hi all

I am an ex-IISc student. I don't want to get into arguments here. But sincerely, I wish to give an advice to all IISc aspirants.

Positive thing about IISc is that its course work is really good and research is also better than IITs (though things depend on group).

Placements are not good at all. IISC lacks dedicated placement cell. They don't welcome companies. Also, if you are planning to go abroad for PhD, IIT B has much better record. This is generally true about most of the departments. If you search previous year Prof. Giri's blogs on admissions, Things will be more clear to you.

Acc. to me, you must give a second thought before joining IISC. Contact to the seniors in the department. Ask them your queries, then, take a decision.

Please, don't reply to my comment. Just wanted to share my opinion with juniors

Good Luck!!!!

haha. nice try. quality of education /research done by most faculty is also sub-par and can be categorized as "pathetic" too.

IISc is massively overhyped, but due to shortage of opportunities for students wishing to pursue research in India, they end up joining IISc. no other reason.

Sir, its nice that you have finally opened up a much needed Admissions section on your blog.

I was looking over some of the cutoffs for 2011 (will be giving my GATE in 2013) and noticed that while ME rank cut offs fall below AIR - 50 almost every year, the Research Program cut offs fall at around 500-550 AIR (I am assuming the listed number in the spreadsheet is rank and not GATE score). I am a little confused by this. Why is it that there is more favor towards taking up ME and so small interest in taking up MSc(engg). They both seem like on the same level just a different approach to doing masters. While ME is more course based, M.Sc is more research based. Is it that IISc M.Sc program is worse than ME? Or is this drop in AIR due to the fact that students in general are not interested in taking up research based courses? As a simple comparison, if someone is getting a ME course and MSc course offer simultaneously which one would be better intrinsically?

Or is it about placements? Do commercial and government research labs prefer a M.Sc over a ME? Or is it all about being from a good institute and having a good publication history?

-Paresh

Anonymous said...

One more thing, you keep on suggesting that one should talk to seniors before they take up a course in IISc. But how is one supposed to reach said seniors? Is there a central place where at least there email IDs are listed so one can try reaching that way. Because it is most definitely not possible for everyone to have a contact there.

-Paresh

Giri@iisc said...

The cutoffs given in the website is the GATE score and not rank.

Or is this drop in AIR due to the fact that students in general are not interested in taking up research based courses?

Yes.

As a simple comparison, if someone is getting a ME course and MSc course offer simultaneously which one would be better intrinsically?

ME, in general. For the simple reason that it is a fixed term course and one can complete it in 2 years. The research course may take 3 years.

Contacting seniors means emailing a few people already in IISc and asking them. some will definitely reply.

For Anon@ March 27, 2012 10:48 PM: Check out NCL Pune's PhD program. Several faculty members work on process design, and application of modeling/simulation to industrial problems. Sketchy details are available at http://www.ncl-india.org/PhDAdmission/Phd_admission_webpage.htm and an incomplete list of courses and faculty profiles at https://sites.google.com/site/nclpgrpe/home/files/PGRPE_CE_NCL_2011.pdf?attredirects=0
Both the site and the document will be updated as soon as interview/application deadlines are finalized. before anyone else comments, I agree that this is a good example of the terrible websites that are discussed in another thread in this blog.

ME Materials placement is not at all impressive. people could get through only low profile companies ... a very few high profile companies turned up but none of them cleared... but do not think that you may clear it if you join because their expectations are much more than an ME can give. The usual TVS, Bharat Forge and Midhani come and offer 5 LPA job. If you are not from a good college, try your luck... else i am sure that you have a better offer ! reminding again, if you want to join job, not IISc... its too bad for that unless you have smart circuit branches... at least a chemical. :) only loosers bookworms join ME Materials engg who are not good at placement activities in bringing companies... and even if you have plans for an Engineering PhD and "join industry", IISc wont be able to help you atleast in Meta. you may have to go for postdoc. PhD placement in Meta is ZERO!

hello sir

how are the placements for msc in electronics systems. How many core companies visit the campus. I hav heard there is no placement cell in iisc.

Anonymous said...

Hello sir,

After talking to many people (students of IIXs included but not IISc) I find that the general conscientious is research in Indian institutes is sub par. They usually recommend that one must go for an American or other universities in developed countries to do "actual real research". I do not have anything against people taking up a good education for a good placement, but is it so that a person getting into an IIX would still not be able to get exposure to research? Because if that is true, it is quite depressing.

Is it wise to do a Ph.d abroad after m.tech in IISc ? Is there any advantage of getting into a top US university through iisc ?

Giri@iisc said...

One can do direct Ph.D after BE/BTech in IISc also. Recently, two of my students finished their Ph.D after B.Tech in less than four years and went abroad for one year. Now, they have returned as faculty in IITs. Thus, at the age of 27, they are faculty of IIT.

Regarding doing Ph.D after M.Tech in IISc. It is difficult to get into the top 20 school with financial aid without a tag of IIT/IISc and, therefore, degree in IIX helps and also helps evaluate whether one is really interested in research.

Dear March 17, 2012 7:26 AM,

I will explain the possibilities you can have after MSc/ME and you can take a decision. before that I want to make sure one thing. in Materials Engg, in IISc, MSc Engineering always outperformed ME both in placements and further higher studies... you can verify it by group pages.

1. Materials Engg does not prefer MSc Engg. The admission is heavily in the hand of professors and they never prefer MSc engg. it may be because MSc engg people come with an aim to go abroad and by the end of 2.5 - 3 years they are able to produce a good thesis which is ok for places like Stanford and Cornel. The so called big shot professors would obviously not support this because they rate their status equal to Cornel!! ( this is not a general case... but in materials, of course). they claim that MSc engg is 3/4th of PhD and the effort is same. So if you join a professor, he will force you to convert to Phd to extract maximum work out of you. go through the number of MS in electrical, Aero and chemical and meta and understand what I meant.

2. The environment in meta is not professonal. students look like psychic and they surely are under the sword of professors. There is no guarantee that you will get a supporting professor like Giri. Sometimes, they wouldn even give you a proper recommendation due to ego problems. There are very few professors in Meta with professonal attitude. most of them treat students secondary. But as I said, there are some real good people too. getting under them is very tough as everyone would want to join them.

3. You may not get your choice of research. if your profile is slightly down, you will end up with professors with no relation to what you studied for four years. remember, materials engg in IISc is multidisciplinary.

3. Placements are unpredictable.
2007,2011 had good placements. 2008 and 2012 are really poor. 2012 is poor when most of the other engineering branches performed really good. ME students somehow forgot to bring in quality placements when they were mugging books. some smart ME students tried to get into US universities, but sadly no one could get a single offer till now as the funding in US is really bad this time.

4. do not expect a good career from IISc. this place is for science students. they are trained in a different way than engineers. IISc admit only top 1%. but the 1% under perform their pals at IITs even MTechs are Matkas at IITs!!!

6. Prof Giri's students completed their research in less than four years and joined IITs...
well, Prof Giri is a famous man in IISc and in India. He is known for his passion and attitude toward research. each of his student go with so many research publications with them that would take them to good places. thats a different case. we cant generalize that either.

7. I would suggest you to try MS in mech or Aero or in Chemical. the job profile is much better there. if you really want to study meta, join mech professors doing materials research and take courses in meta dept.

You seem to be a fan of Prof. Giri. What makes you think he is famous in India?

Ankur Kulkarni said...

To the many students asking questions here, this is just a suggestion.

Please articulate your questions with carefully constructed complete sentences, without spelling errors, unnecessary capitalisations, excessive question marks, exclamations etc. Most of you have secured high ranks in GATE and are well qualified; your writing should reflect this. Also, don't beg for answers and ensure that you don't sound rude or casual.

All this will significantly improve your chances at getting replies here, and later at getting admission and jobs too.

I don't understand the comments of a few people who talk only about research and not about the financial part associated with a degree.
Research has to be definitively funded and if the person who does research is not funded why should he do research at first place? he has to survive first.
I strongly believe that IISc might have some faults but the bigger fault is elsewhere. Industrial Research is something which brings lot of funds. Concentrating only on breakthrough research is not going to help.
Also I won't be wrong if i say industries themselves dont' spend adequate amt on research

I would like to know, how do you say that chemical engineering is better?
I am not a student in IISc Chem Engg Dept. Its only that i aspire to be one among them.
What kind of a job can we expect if I do M.E. in chem engg.

Anonymous said...

@ChemE seniors

I observed from the iisc chem engg page that placements (i mean r&d and some technical job rather than tvs) were very good until 2009 . But later not good placements.
Why don't companies like Shell India Tech Centre, IOC R&D, some majors like Dow chemicals,Advanced Refining LLC ,and other companies come. They really are very good companies.
Kindly put some light on it.
I believe its not only research and acads, most of us beleive in research and industry also.
May be if these companies come to IIsc , It can rise above IITB and other iits.

Professor,
If the number of students offered seats in ME courses is indeed more than the actual number of seats so as to account for the usual acceptance rate, would it mean that a few will be left with out a seat if more than the usual number of applicants accept the offer?
I know it is a bit dumb of me to expect such a mess up from an institution like IISc, its just that the seat I have been offered matters a lot to me

Giri@iisc said...

All students offered admission can join. Therefore, in some years, there will be more students than the capacity and in some years, there will be less than the capacity.

ME Chemical Engineering has 12 seats in general category. We make 18 offers. Some years, 14 join while in some years, 10 join..does not matter if all 18 join!

Thank you for your prompt reply, Professor.

Sir

I received an offer letter for joining ME in Computer Science & Engineering. I have been asked to send my original GATE score card to IISc by post. Is it necessary to send the original score card itself? What if it gets lost while sending? Also, I am a bit undecided whether to join IISc or IIT-B. I won't be able to join IIT-B if I send my original scorecard to IISc.
Please reply.

Anonymous said...

Dear geo,

It is mandatory to send the card in original. There is no point thinking what if it is lost. What if your entire envelop is lost and it never reaches IISc? What if it reaches late and you are denied admission? You can have endless questions and possibilities like this.

And of course you have to make up your mind whether you want to join IISc or IITB. You can't say yes to both and later deny rendering the seat vacant for whole 2 year program. That's the point of asking to submit the card in original.

Anonymous said...

@ Rahul and similar ones,

Everybody at IISc knows that it is not a crime to crave for good salaries and people often go for higher studies for enhancement in salaries. But do you expect the professors in the panel to entertain you for the sake of your salary hike? The professors are very happy seeing their students placed in great places. But for god's sake, think before putting the crap of - I do not want to do PhD, I want higher salary, I am not very much interested in research etc etc. What the hell do you think you want to convey to them that they are employment agents and once in a while they can do their research also.

This is for all those who aspire to be at IISc. IISc is a great place just to be in. Only a handful lucky people are blessed enough to experience that heaven. So if you want to be there, you have to contribute to what has made it so (and I mean research by that).

With the amount of good and bad stuff getting posted here, Prof. Giri should think about adding a more sophisticated commenting system than blogger default. maybe disqus or something like that, which can allow upvote or downvote and sort according to different parameters. Just a thought though, it is his blog.

dear professor,
Any institute is ranked based on the quality of students it has apart from the faculties. While having chat with many of the current students I found that students are preferring IITB even when they have offer from IISc. I also talked with chemical students . So if all the toppers in gate start preferring IITB then how can one still rate IISc as the best ?
P.S : Im just asking what a student had asked me .

Anonymous said...

@ April 21, 2012 3:55 PM

Well the thing is, many top rankers i know are preferring IISc over IITB.... but neither of our cases can be generalised to say "all toppers are preferring ABC over XYZ". Mathematically speaking our sample space is too small to be used for a satistical study. Besides its completely a personal call, whether to join IISc or IITB (I, for one, chose the former).
And lastly. I really believe its about time we stop discussing which institute is better than the other. Its childish and totally unexpected off people who are supposed to a part of India's best technical and research institutes, or aspire to be so. Each institute has its own merits and demerits.

Anonymous said...

sir,
I have to ask regarding the UG admissions that given the last date for submitting the application is 7 april when are the first set of offers expected to be made.can you give me a tentative date
THANK YOU.

Anonymous said...

@ April 21, 2012 3:55 PM

I completely agree with the reply of anon 7:53. Adding to that, it may not be obvious, but one needs to know the nature of the institutes. IISc and IITB are completely opposite as far as their vision towards research is concerned. It seems that you are having an impression that most of the top rank holders are joining IITB because it is better than IISc. That is far from reality. The reality is that IITB is far better than IISc for getting highly paid jobs and that is the way all the faculty look at research and training at IITB. It is only and only the greed for more and more money that is making students prefer IITB. Further, since IITK does not seem to appear in picture at all, heads up for those who are not aware (or pretend not to be aware), IITK is the only institute in India which is somewhere close to IISc when it comes to research. I would say that a candidate really interested in research would strive to get into IITK if he does not happen to get into IISc.

FYI: From a personal conversation with a friend at IITB, "IISc people know about IITK faculty and not IITB faculty because IITK is the place from where real research comes out apart from IISc!"

I did my M Tech (Mech) from a central university and has a research experience of 3 years from a DST-SERC project. My findings were not too encouraging but the learning from the study and development was absolutely immense.I would have done better if i had an more experienced person with me .That is why i wanted to join IISC. I am gate qualified (not a good score , but appeared just to get into IISc) and would like to do my Phd there. It is very sad that IISc took Rs 600 from me just to check and reject the form.I think this prejudice on GATE Score is dangerous and at least IISC should give us a chance to present what we know (Thank god IITK gives you that chance-That is exactly why lot of people rank them better than IISC).At least IISc should give the money back if students are not called for the interview.Nevertheless, Dear sir , you are doing a good work .Keep it up .

@Anon June 9, 2012 10:08 AM

Its hard to judge anyone's research capability based on a 30 mins interview. So if a professor finds that a research assistant who may have worked with him/her for some time is good, I do not see anything wrong in taking them for phd - provided they meet other criteria. Based on what I saw this year in the interviews, the interview process is just as rigorous, perhaps more so, for a student who has already some experience because the panel typically expects them to know better than others.

Hello Sir,
I have got M.Tech admission at IIT Gandhinagar(Electrical) and got over my M.sc interview at IISc.WHICH ONE SHOULD I PREFER(If i get M.Sc at IISc) as many are saying its better to join old prestigious institutes like IISc or Old IITs even if its M.S than to join NEW IIT.Please guide me sir. Also ,What are the prospects after doing M.Sc?Thank You.

Anonymous said...

At IISc, there z no preference for old students rather interview wil b harder dan others. Der z no partiality in selection here.

Anonymous said...

@Sreejith,
There are subtle differences between an Mtech and an MSc. An MSc(Engg) at IISc requires less number of courses to be taken and prepares you for a career in research, you should take it if you are more inclined towards research - either in the industry(R&D) or academics (PhD). Compare both the degrees in terms of content, and take the one that matches more with your interests. You could talk to students at both the institutes to get more idea of the specialization.

When it comes to comparing IIT Gandhinagar and IISc, IISc definitely has an advantage of already being an established institution of repute and the exposure that you can get at IISc to the various dimensions of science is unmatchable. So, even after comparing the two degrees, if you are not sure which one more matches your interest, go for IISc. Wish you good luck.
