INSPIRE results will be out by Feb first week. So, should one start to send applications before that or wait till the results are announced? It has been mentioned earlier in this blog that nowadays, most IITs treat INSPIRE applications on the same level as regular Assistant Professor applications. Is it true?

Can someone share his/her recent experience?

It will be helpful for future aspirants like me.

Professor Sriram, any updates on when IITM Mech, Civil faculty applicants can expect to hear back regarding the shortlisting.
Many Thanks!

Wishing all a happy new Year.

I know its forum for IIT but still I hope somebody can answer this.

Regarding Assistant professor at NIT AGP 8000 the criteria is
"2 papers in SCI journals outside Ph.D. work. One ongoing sponsored project for
candidates from academia. Two experimental or computational projects added to teaching laboratories where appropriate"

Can anyone elaborate -

what ongoing sponsored project means for a post doctoral fellow?

Are papers from SCI Expanded considered?

How is outside PhD defined (papers published after defense)?

Professor Sriram, On a related note to above question on shortlisting date, when are IITM Mech, Civil faculty interviews expected to be scheduled?

Any idea when recruitment will start at IIT Tirupati and Palakkad?
Thanks in advance

IIT Tirupati will start recruiting once a director is appointed. Currently IITM's director is their acting director.
But I'm told by professors there that they are ready to appoint people on temporary contracts until the recruitment officially starts.

Dear Prof Sriram
As the shortlisting for some of the departments are over; if the applicant doesn't yet receive any email or update in the portal - does it mean that the applicant hasn't been shortlisted?

With my experience of applying at IITM in case you dont see anything on logging
it means that you are not shortlisted.

Dear Prof. Sriram,

I too have the same doubt as Kumar. I do not see anything---other than the usual menu and the update on departments shortlisted. I had applied to EE and CS. I did not receive any E-mail. So, my application is not shortlisted?

Hello everyone,

Kindly let me know if there a system in IITs where if the person offered a faculty position declines the offer, then the person next in the list of rank (ranking done by selection committee) is offered the position?

Thanks

iitmsriram said...

@anon, IITs do not recruit for a set number of openings (flexi cadre), so there is no selection list + waiting list. Non-teaching posts are usually for set number of vacancies, so selection list + waiting list is the norm. As there is no waiting list, often the faculty selection committees do not rank the selected candidates but simply prepare a selection list.

iitmsriram said...

@kumar and others, the IITM applications portal appears to have some software problem, so it is not showing shortlisting status, this should get fixed by tomorrow or so. When you logon, it will display a message "congratulation, you have been shortlisted ... " if your name is on the shortlist or "your name is not found in the shortlist ... either because shortlisting has not been completed for the department or you have not been shortlisted ..." if your name is not on the shortlist.

@iitmsriram
Dear sir,
How/when one would know if they can apply again for the same position at an IITX if his/her application was not considered? Are applications considered every year/half year?
Actually, I did not prepare my application properly last year and new publications and accolades have been added to my profile since then. The IITX won't say anything if the application is under consideration or rejected.

iitmsriram said...

@anon wondering about re-applying. Varies across IITs. At IITM, we have a rolling ad and also a fixed date ad. Current fixed date ad was released in October and had a closing date of Nov 9. Shortlisting is almost over and interviews start next week and will end by Feb end. We will release another dated ad in Feb / Mar with closing date in Mar / April. With this kind of dated ads, you can apply afresh against each one. For a rolling ad, there is no closing date, but there is an ad date. Periodically, a fresh rolling ad is released with a new ad date. Re-applying against the same rolling ad may not lead to reconsideration, but re-applying against the new rolling ad will almost certainly get fresh consideration.

Hello all,

I got an offer from one of the newer IITs. However, I would really like to move eventually (hopefully in 2-3 years) to the IISER in my hometown (to which I had applied but didn't get in). I am wondering if it is possible to take along the lab equipments & stuff bought with external project grant money from one institute (IIT) to another (IISER).

Thanks

Anonymous said...

This is regarding visit to IIT-X for technical seminar and interaction with faculty members.

I have been selected for INSPIRE faculty award and wrote to several IITs for a position.
I got replies from two IITs asking me to visit and give a seminar and interact with the faculty there. I also came to know that most IITs have the same procedure for selecting regular and INSPIRE faculty.

I have been asked to highlight my research as well as teaching skills during the seminar. Does it mean that i have to prepare a topic for teaching separately in my seminar? And does the 'interaction' with faculty members amount to several interviews by the senior professors.

Advice from senior people and forum members will be very helpful.....

Thank you....

Dear Prof. Madras, Prof. Sriram and other fellow visitors to this blog,
This blog has been a great resource for getting "inside" information on hiring process in scientific institutes in India. I am working as a postdoc in USA for the past few years and have benefitted immensely from the discussions here.

Recently, I have been selected for Senior Scientist position at a CSIR lab and I am planning to join this position later this year.
I am interested in applying for Ramanujan fellowship at this CSIR lab so that I can get additional funding for my research. I understand that I will not be able to draw salary from the fellowship once I join the senior scientist position. I will be submitting my application for this fellowship before I join the Senior Scientist position so I think I am still eligible.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone can share information on whether DST allows such applications or if anyone has gone through this route in the past?

Thanks very much in advance.
SA

Vijay said...

If you have a job offer from an Indian institution and you have accepted it, you may not be eligible to apply for Ramanujan. This is what I learned recently from somebody who has an offer from my department and wanted to apply for Ramanujan (similar position as yourself). In the past, people have done it (i.e., apply after accepting an offer but before coming to India) but it looks like it is not possible anymore. Vijay (IISc).

Anonymous said...

I got an offer from an IIT in July and then I applied for the Ramanujan fellowship in August. I was offered the Ramanujan fellowship in November and I returned to India in December and joined the institute. So, until two months ago, it was possible to apply for Ramanujan after getting the offer but before returning to India.

As Vijay mentioned in the comment above, things might have changed. But I'm not aware of it.

The IIT that I joined usually doesn't forward the Ramanujan fellowship application of any person who hasn't received a job offer from them.

Giri@iisc said...

Please read

http://serb.gov.in/fellowships.php

Ramanujan Fellowship are only for those candidates who are doing Post Doctoral abroad and not for the people who already have permanent position in a scientific organization in the country.

Anonymous said...

I think the discrepancy lies in the difference between "currently working in a permanent position" and "having an offer of a permanent position". It seems that one can apply for Ramanujan in the latter case but not in the former case.

Anonymous said...

Prof. Giri and Vijay- It seems that there is some ambiguity regarding the eligibility conditions for this fellowship and I have heard contrasting cases. As mentioned by two Anons above, DST has considered applications from folks who have offer letter but not actually joined and this has happened as recently as December 2015. Having said that, I am not sure why Vijay's colleague was denied this opportunity if he had not actually joined IISc. I would try to get a clarification from DST and post it here. It would be great if other candidates can also share their experience regarding this route.

Anon (7.49 PM): Thanks for putting it very succinctly. The two phrases resemble each other superficially but the implied meaning is quite different!

Anonymous said...

Anon (3.19 PM): This is in continuation of my above comment.
Congratulations on your new position and for the award of the fellowship! Your experience with Ramanujan fellowship looks very streamlined as you were awarded in just 4 months of applying. Can you comment if this is general for all applicants and whether there are any specific application deadlines/cycles during each year? I couldn't get this information on DST website. I had assumed that it would take much more than 4 months to hear a decision from DST but I am pleasantly surprised at their efficiency.

Vijay said...

"Prof. Giri and Vijay- It seems that there is some ambiguity regarding the eligibility conditions for this fellowship and I have heard contrasting cases."

SA, and the anons above, I think DST's rationale is to encourage people to come back to India through Ramanujan Fellowships (read: only through Ramanujan). DST probably discourages applicants (who have an offer for permanent positions in India) from applying for Ramanujan just for research grants mainly because there are various other options available within SERB.

Anon above pointed out the difference between "currently working in a permanent position" and "having an offer of a permanent position". I'd like to point out that there is one more subtlety: "having an offer of a permanent position" and "accepting the offer of a permanent position".

You may want to apply and see what happens. This is one of those YMMV situations.

Vijay (IISc).

Anonymous said...

I'm the anon from yesterday 3:19 and 7:49 PM.

1. I think there are a few cycles (not publicly announced) every year. The committee meets once very few months and then decides upon the applications received until then. I'm not aware of the frequency with which they meet. I was told by Dr. Kohli at DST that the last meeting happened some time in Sep/Oct and the results were announced on 23 Nov. So the next meeting should be due soon.

2. Vijay: The IIT that I have joined (and also many others to which I talked to and applied) forward one's Ramanujan fellowship only if they're offering you a job offer. So I also applied for Ramanujan after I had received and "accepted" their offer.
I know it somehow conflicts with the guidelines mentioned on SERB website. As another anon mentioned, the original intention of Ramanujan fellowship was to attract talent from abroad. But due to the attitude of several IITs (that they've refused to host a person who doesn't have a permanent job with them), it has now been reduced to a glorified research grant that you get if you're returning to India.

Anonymous said...

Anon (4:56 PM): Thanks for your helpful comments and also for sharing your experience with the application process.

I have looked more closely at the nomination and acceptance letters for Ramanujan fellowship.
The nomination letter says: "I wish to nominate Dr. for Ramanujan Fellowship ---------, who is presently working at ………………………………………….. and is not employed in India."
The acceptance letter says: "Forwarded by Head of the host Institute: Institute has nominated Dr.--
We will host him/her, as he/she is returning back to country after the date of issue of his/her Ramanujan Fellowship award letter i.e. dated _________________.

It seems that DST is OK with candidates as long as they have not joined the position in India by the time of award of the fellowship. Your case also fits well into these regulations (offer accepted in November and returned to India in December)

a) How rigid is the requirement of post doctoral experience after completing the Phd for Assistant Professor ? ( As in can exceptional work during the Phd be enough )

- Probably if one does not have the requisite post doc experience then she or he is appointed on contractual basis.

b) What is the difference between an Assistant Professor and an Assistant Professor on Contract ?

iitmsriram said...

@Rahul wonders "What is the difference between an Assistant Professor and an Assistant Professor on Contract" - answer, pay. Though no policy document mandates it, some of the IIXs are insisting on contractual AP's going through a selection committee in order to be (regular 8000 grade pay) AP.

rahul said...

Thanks @iitmsriram

Anonymous said...

In addition to Prof. Sriram's definition, there is one more difference.
Assistant professor (on contract) is not a "permanent" job. You can be theoretically fired from your job if the director wishes so - although it has happens very rarely in practice. I know of only one case from several years ago when a person was asked to leave.
If you're a "full" Assistant Professor, then firing requires a great deal of bureaucratic paper work and therefore happens only in the extreme cases with a consensus of many people.

So the difference basically boils down to the amount of free speech you will enjoy. In either case, one year of probation period will restrict the freedom of speech anyway.

AD, some are good. I work in an engineering department and we admit students from both engineering (BE/BTech + ME/MTech) and science (BSc + MSc) backgrounds to our PhD program. In my limited experience, the students from engineering background do slightly better at math than their science counterparts. When I say math, I mean modeling at the continuum level, problem formulation and coding them in whatever platform the student is comfortable with (Matlab, Comsol, Abacus, etc.). But then, there are also science-background students who are fast learners and do well given enough time. Hope this helps, Vijay (IISc).

I hope that many know about Academic performance index API score prescribed by UGC for the promotions to Associate Prof and Professor in universities.

If you look at the criteria and score number, I wonder if it can be fulfilled or possessed by most of the associate or professors in IIT/IISC.(minimum score is 300/400) with capping % for research publications, books, funded projects, training courses, PhD theses guidance and what not? Even for publications you get score number based on coauthorship, first author or corresponding author.

Now the concern is not whether IIT/IISC should follow UGC or UGC should follow guidelines of IIT/IISC. If we can do the exercise of calculating scores for associate or professors in IIT/IISC, it may indicate an answer. My intention is to compare two sets of institutes (one with high support and other with less)

In India, we know how much support is given to universities in terms of funding and other facilties when compared to IIT/IISc/Research institutes. IISc do not have teaching load as universities.

At the end of the day every one should be compared equally or atleast based on the support they receive to conduct research.

i am not even sure if the policy makers of this scores have attained the promotions through these scores as it is recent one. So they failed to understand and unfortunately they will be counting the scores in the interview board.

Please write your suggestions and ideas.

Anonymous said...

Why do not you post the API score of Prof. Giridhar Madras as an example and let us see.

Anonymous said...

I respect and he is a role model, and I am not talking about one or two or few exceptions. Even in universities few are owning good API. I am talking in general not specifying or giving less merit to any individual contributions.

Anyone has any idea when is the next selection committee meeting for selection of Ramanujan fellows?

Anonymous said...

@Prof. Sriram, IITM. Two body problem at IITM? I would like to know how IITM is viewing on two-body problem. IITM (or many Institutions) may not have anything on this in paper, but in practice, they may follow some norms regarding this. Especially, if husband and wife apply for the same department with different specializations, how it will be viewed? Assuming both meet the norms for shortlisting, then only one will be called-for interview (who has higher qualification/credentials)? or both? or none? Also, if one applies for a position when his/her specialization is not mentioned by the department, what is chance of shortlisiting him/her (assuming he/she meets the norms set by the department for shortlisting, but his/her specialization is not called-for in the advertisement). One more last question. A science graduate (all degrees from Science discipline) can apply to Engineering dept? (if the phd research area overlaps to the Engineering field). I suppose, AICTE/UGC demands to have at least one engineering degree to join in Engineering departments. I will be thankful if you could reply to these questions.

Warning: include_once(): Unable to allocate memory for pool. in _field_info_field_cache() (line 27 of /vhost/facapp/facapp2016a/modules/field/field.info.inc).

Is this OK to ignore? Will this affect submitting my application successfully?

Thanks,

iitmsriram said...

@anon-with-two-body-issue (issue, not problem!). IITM is indifferent to start with - at the screening stage, each application will be evaluated independently. At the interview stage, a generally sympathetic stance is taken (the spouse with the weaker credentials may be given some leeway / consideration). Beyond this, there are no issues of department or specialisation. Other IIX may handle differently.

Applications outside advertised area will be treated as such - they will not be processed unless they meet the broad exception clause "may consider candidates whose area of specialisation lie outside those stated herein, provided these persons have an outstanding record".

IITM does not have hard requirement in terms of degree / department. Each department sets its own requirements, most are broad in outlook and only look for experience in relevant area, irrespective of department. However, departments do consider teaching requirements, this is likely where some science background candidates may run into difficulties in engineering departments. We do ask for a teaching statement along with the application and if candidate is able to make the case here and show that the background will not be a limitation and there are sufficient courses that he / she can handle, that will be taken positively.

Interviews are expected in late May upto early July; offers will go out on July 22.

Pl. ignore the memory allocation error at facapp.iitm.ac.in, I will have it fixed. It has no effect on any of the application data submitted.

@Prof. Sriram,
Dear Prof. Sriram,
If a candidate gets an offer from one of the IITs he has applied, would accepting the offer create any administrative issues when appearing for selection interviews at other remaining IITs? Is he required to produce NOCs or anything else during selection committee interviews, given that he has not yet joined and working abroad?
The candidate applications are being processed simultaneously (only selection committee interviews are left) at other IITs, and his joining date at the accepted IIT is very late. Probably, decision at all other IITs would be made by then!

I want to add something for all prospective applicants to IISc: IISc is an excellent place. Yes, it is not perfect (no place really is) but if you are a bright, motivated and industrious person, you can do extremely well here.

Also, most of our departments are ALWAYS looking for really good people. So when you plan to visit India from the US / Europe / UK, please do not hesitate to contact the department(s) well in advance so they can arrange a talk for you. Also, if you have questions, informal emails to people are perfectly ok - they can at least point you in the right direction.

Question about changing IIX.

I'm currently an Assistant Professor at one IIX and am planning to move to another one by the end of this year. I have a couple of questions and hope that the experienced professors might answer them. I'm unable to discuss with my colleagues as the move is not yet finalized.

1. Can the research equipment, books, and computers that I purchased from external research grant be moved to the new location?

2. I understand that I need to take an NOC from our HOD/director before applying to the next place. If the offer that I receive from the next IIX isn't good and I plan not to join that, can it adversely affect my job conditions in the current IIX? Has anyone encountered such cases previously?

3. Lastly and less importantly, the 7th pay commission's recommendations will most likely be implemented retroactively from 1.1.16. If I resign from this IIX, will I be eligible to receive the arrears from this place?

Anonymous said...

See, many professor apply for directorship, they did not get it. Do you think it
hampers their prospects any way. They also need to NOC from their present director through HOD.

When people can do at Professor position, why can't you at AP level.

Regarding research grants, this should be done in conjunction with sponsored agency.

iitmsriram said...

About multi-IIX parallel applications; no NOC will be required if you have not joined. Even if you have joined, at the time of joining, one of the forms will require you to list any "pending" applications, you can list it in this and this case NOC will be a non issue.

@AP-marketing-IISc, yes, IISc is an excellent place. If you want to do mostly research with a bit of teaching, especially PG, IISc is a good choice. If you want to do mostly research and not interested in teaching, there are the national labs. If you want to go the other direction - a bit more teaching and like interacting with UG students, then IITs would be the places to be. Thats my take, YMMV.

@anon considering change of IIX: yes, as replied to by another anon, moving equipment from external grants may or may not work. If sponsoring agency and old IIX agree, you will be able to move the grant and the equipment.

About NOC, a prof applying for directorship is quite different from an AP shifting from one IIX to another. Your applying to another IIX is unlikely to remain a secret, better be open about it. I don't quite understand how the offer at the next IIX can be classified as "isn't good". All will offer matching pay, that is something you are entitled to per government rules. The rest are all "promises", nothing contractually binding. If you are looking at alternates, there must be reasons and it is best your current IIX understands your reasons so that there will be no adverse reactions.

Whenever 7th pay commission is implemented, yes, you will be eligible to receive arrears. You may have to follow up with the old IIX to get this done, may take a couple of gentle proddings.

Anonymous said...

Thanks to anon and Prof. Sriram for the answers.

The reason to move is primarily that this IIX is a new one that I joined after falling for some empty promises. The infrastructure and quality of colleagues is sub-par and is quite unlikely to improve significantly in the near future. I'm sure they know this is the reason for moving and therefore my apprehension.

A candidate having qualification as M.Tech.(Polymer Engg) and Ph.D.(Chem Engg) applied to Scientist position (where M.Tech Chemical Engg is the required qualification) to one of the CSIR lab where he was interviewed after scrutiny committee approves his application as at par with any other Chemical Engg.
He performed very well in the interview and unofficially, he also came to know that he has been selected. Now, CSIR administration is not releasing the offer letter by pointing out that he is not M.Tech. in Chem Engg. They are least bothered about the post qualification or equivalent qualifications
The candidate is also guiding 4 PhD (Chem Engg) students in his institute.

I would appreciate Experience Faculty members(/anyone who has faced such situation) reply in this concern.

Hello Everyone and Prof. Sriram,

At the IIT's before the interview, normally, there is a presentation in front of the all the faculty of the department and the selection committee (if they are available). The presentation sometimes happen the previous day before the interview.

Kindly let me know how the faculty provide feedback to each of the candidate presentation in that how is the assesmment? How does the selection committee takes into account the feedback from the faculty during the interview process.

Thanks

Anonymous said...

Regarding providing feedback for candidate presentation, this is highly subjective and varies with each dept of institute (forget about uniformity about the all IIXs). Sometimes, Head takes opinion of faculty (all verbal) and may put views during faulty selection interview. It is believed that he has put forward dept view regarding each candidate to selection committee in good faith. However, several times , this is not the case. Sometimes Dept does not recommend and still the candidate is offered position. There is no rule that is followed.

Dear prof Sriram
Can you please clarify on recent advertisement for IIT Tirupati and Palakkad?
What does contract faculty positions at the level of AP grade 8000 mean?
Thanks in advance

Hi.
I found information in news reports that IIT Dharwad is going to open from the coming semester and that IIT Bombay is their mentor IIT. However I couldnt find any information regarding IITDharwad on IITB website and no IIT Dharwad website.

Could anyone post an update about the status of IIT Dharwad ? Are there faculty openings there ?

I thank the administrators of this forum to have provided this platform for interaction.

How many vacancies are expected at IIT Tirupati and Palakkad at AP level?

Has anyone joined under INSPIRE faculty scheme, session 2015-II, at IITs/IISc or any other institute/university ?
Please share your experiences.
Are INSPIRE faculties treated on par with regular faculty, or are they just considered as Post-docs with their own grant money?
What are the chances of regularization if you join an institute as INSPIRE faculty?

As far as I know, INSPIRE faculty fellows are treated on par with regular faculty except that (a) you cannot take PhD students on your own; you are however allowed to take students jointly with a regular faculty member, (b) the appointment comes with a set end date and (c) because of the temporary nature of the appointment, you may not get permanent lab/office space. My department in IISc has not taken any INSPIRE fellow this year (or in the recent past).

Please be aware that this is still a temporary position. Your chances of regularization depends on the following: (a) your area of research - should be something the department has to be looking to fill/hire, (b) the CoP (committee of professors) has to vote positively on your case just like they would for any faculty candidate, and (c) your performance during your INSPIRE period. But don't worry about your chances of regularization. Worry instead about how well you can utilize your time as an INSPIRE fellow. If you are good, you are bound to get a position somewhere.

I am not an INSPIRE faculty fellow and the above are my views as an AP in IISc. I'd suggest you to talk to INSPIRE fellows (via telephone or in person) in various IITs/IISc/IISERs to get a better understanding of their experiences. Since you have been selected as an INSPIRE faculty fellow, your profile must be good - so, I recommend you to also apply for regular positions in IITs/IISc/IISERs. - Vijay (AP, IISc).

Anonymous said...

I have talked personally to many INSPIRE fellows and all of them suggested me not to take up this fellowship. Most of them now are again applying for postdoc positions abroad. They feel that the response from institutes is far better when you apply from abroad rather than being a INSPIRE fellow. Generally, the chances of getting a regular position being as a INSPIRE fellow in the same institute depends on many factors as Vijay mentioned. One has to wait for 5 year to know your fate. You literally have to shut your mouth and have to maintain good relationship with HoD, diector, senior faculty members etc. Ideally, you don't want to be in this situation (on knife edge) at this age and point of your career. Of course, one can also apply at other institutes but getting a AP level position in IITs/IISER being a INSPIRE fellow is very low. The case with Ramanujan fellows is bit better.

Anonymous said...

Thanks a lot Prof. Vijay and the anonymous person for your views on the matter.
I am in the process of joining as INSPIRE faculty at an institute and will share my own experiences in the near future.

However, I have heard that the old IITs take INSPIRE fellows only if they are interested in recruiting them at regular positions at a later date. And also the process of hiring INSPIRE fellows is same as that of regular faculty. How true is this?

Anonymous said...

With reference to above discussion about INSPIRE Faculty
After my Ph.D., I was postdoctoral fellow for 1.5 years in USA. Then I joined a National laboratory as INSPIRE faculty. In less than 2 years, I got regular faculty position in another central government funded laboratory.
Based on my experience, INSPIRE faculty are not treated like regular faculty. The chances of getting a regular position being as a INSPIRE fellow in the same institute depends on many factors. In my opinion, if you could publish an article, independently in decent journal, chances of getting regular faculty position would be very high.

Anonymous said...

How restrictive are IITs in terms of a new faculty using funds to buy a computer? Do you have to go through approved vendor? What if somebody wants to bring computer parts from USA when joining the institute and build their own workstation, do administration allow/reimburse that? In India there are limited options for computer parts and also it tends to be very expensive!

Do NOT join as an INSPIRE faculty (if you have any other option-- postdoc, industry job, school teacher job, significant saving in your bank account, or loving parents who would allow you to stay with them till you find a decent job).

In case I was not clear, let me repeat-- Do NOT join as INSPIRE faculty.

DST has to seriously look at INSPIRE faculty scheme and at least ensure that INSPIRE fellows get a regular position within a reasonable time-frame.

Thanks !

Anonymous said...

Yes it will come up. But do not expect any recruitments in near future (read unless director is hired). Further in First year you have no core courses.
Also preference is given to retired Professors from Mentor institutes as you will see in case of IIT Palakkas and Tirupati.

Sharing my personal experience so that people benefit from it

In case you are above 35 years do not expect to be hired in IITs new/old.
Even if its in a department where there are 5 people or in a remote location.
You can apply but do not pin your hopes on it or make your future plans on it.

And never believe faculty shortage stories!

Related to the above 35 yr old post. I was talking to one IISER faculty and he mentioned that there is instruction from high level authority, not to consider above 35 yrs old candidate for AP level.
Now I have a question to the senior members here. If a candidate guided one PhD student independently with reasonable publication record and the candidate is working equivalent to Assistant Professor for the past 4 years in an abroad institution. He is 40 years old. Is he eligible or has any chance to absorbed as Associate Professor in any IITs, IISERs or IISc?

Anonymous said...

I know at least one person who was hired as Associate Prof. in IITM after being an Assistant Prof. for about 5 years at University of Texas Health Sciences Center.

Anonymous said...

The 35 year issue is there - true. I have recently joined an IIT and I've seen that there is an informal rule about not considering candidates above 35 unless they're exceptional. I don't know if it is right or wrong to have such a criteria, but the criteria is there at most places.
However, we recently (in March) hired one person who is above 35, simply because he was better than most other candidates. This happened because there were sane voices in the shortlisting committee (at departmental level) who didn't approve of this 35-year rule. I'm not sure how many department shortlisting committees have such people - my guess is that there are very few.

Hi Everyone,
Any comments on Nature Index ranking of institutions?
When the criterion "Weighted fractional count" is considered, which adjusts for co-authorships and high publication volumes in fields such as astronomy, IITs (combined) rank at 50, IISc is at 131, IISERs (combined) at 143? Perhaps combining all IITs and IISers is Ok because the number of faculty at these institutions is small. All IITs combined may have 3000 faculty, and all IISers combined may have 500. For context, Penn state University alone has more than 3000 faculty. It seems that we are improving. What do you think? http://www.natureindex.com/institution-outputs?region=global&subject=543ddf38140ba05a167e14bb&sort_by=weighted_score&sector=All&generate=Generate

It would appear some have had bad experience as INSPIRE fellows, that does not mean all institutions treat the fellows badly or that the program is bad. One anon states " ... old IITs take INSPIRE fellows only if they are interested in recruiting them at regular positions at a later date ... " I thought this is how it is supposed to work. INSPIRE requires the hosting institution to commit to considering the candidate for regular faculty position, provided they meet all requirements. If the hosting institution is not interested in considering for regular position but will just only host, they are undermining the INSPIRE program. INSPIRE hosted candidates will be considered, but selection cannot be guaranteed; how can DST ensure that INSPIRE fellows get selected?

All the new IITs will start with some retired (or deputed) faculty from host institution only. But these are all temporary (max 3 years), so it has no impact on regular faculty aspirants. For IIT Palakkad and Tirupati which started functioning in July 2015, the ministry sanctioned regular faculty posts only in Feb 2016, so there is really no choice but to start with retirees and deputees. Recruitment is going on now.

I have posted on this blog about 35 age "limit", one can look through the earlier replies. If one is entering the market at age 35, there should be a good reason why, as this is a delayed entry. If you are able to project the good reason, the age will not matter. Incidentally, @H, the IITM hire was taken on as assistant professor and promoted to associate professor the next year.

can anybody highlight pros and cons of considering IITs vs IIMs (in operations management area) for an industrial engineering Ph D from a descent US university? what are research prospects in an IIM?

Anonymous said...

Dear Prof Sriram
Is working in a renowned engineering consultancy company to support family responsibilities count as "a good reason"?
In my perception selection committee doesn’t look beyond the first page of the application form where the age is probably amongst the first five entries.
And in some IITs the clerical staff itself gather paper for recycling based on this number.

Of course nobody will try to make any amends as it suits better to cry over faculty shortage
to glorify the hallowed portals!

iitmsriram said...

@anon, I don't know how many selection committees you have seen in action to build up the perception that they don't look beyond the first page of the form. Actually, if the selection committee is reduced to doing this, the HoD and / or Dean are not doing their job. And, if HoD and Dean take their job seriously, a single page dossier per candidate is generally quite enough for the selection committee to decide if the candidate should be shortlisted for interviewing (actually, it may take less than a page). Taking up a job due to family considerations is quite a valid reason to delay entering academics. But here also, if one did this after PhD and after a few years wants to come to academics, that would be a bit of a hard sell. I mean, if family considerations require one to work, it would be bit odd to put that aside and do a PhD.

In the last 5 years, 35 of 120 assistant professors hired at IITM were over 35. About half of these were just over, upto about 36, but about a dozen were over 38, including 3 over 40. And, I am only counting those who are assistant professors at IITM as of now (so those, like the case mentioned by @H above, who came after being APs elsewhere and already got promoted to AsP at IITM are not in my count). So, this "clerk will throw out my application" does not happen at IITM and I don't believe it happens at other places either. I suspect that HoDs find "you are over 35" to be a very expedient excuse.

If you're really keen on going there due to geographical reasons, it will be a good idea to wait until CVR Murthy leaves the director's position.

Anonymous said...

Annon @ May 6, 2016 at 7:32 AM
That's an opinion based on news reports. CVRM is brash and not the most practical person in Indian context, but he is reasonable man if you are doing your job correctly. There are many ways to enforce discipline and his method isn't very appealing!
If you are worried about getting fired for nonperformance, I believe that's a good thing. Many candidates join IITs for the allure of comfortable life and take it too easy. They should definitely be fired. In fact this kind of system should be enforced in all government institutions. There are many mediocre candidates who gets though the limited scrutiny of selection procedure. Their performance are better assessed over a long duration. Nobody complains when it happens in a private organisation, but everyone takes government jobs for granted! If you are getting fired due to academic nonperformance reasons, I don't think it's unfair. However, if you are fired due to politics and not towing the line of your seniors, that's a different issue.

I had a few questions about SERB's extra-mural funding programs (especially the Early Career Research Awards), that you could perhaps help me with.

1. What are the typical limits on the percentage of grants that can be used for travel or inviting collaborators? Do these limits depend upon the proposal or are they fixed in advance? (the SERB website seems to suggest there is a limit but does not say what the limit is).

2. Is is possible to send a grant proposal in the time between accepting a position and joining it?

Thank you again for being so responsive on this website.

This is regarding extension of joining date for DST-INSPIRE faculty award.

Can someone comment on this based on their experiences? Does DST extend the joining date or are they rigid about this?

Thanks..

Anonymous said...

@Anonumous May 12. 2016 at 3:30 PM

I don't think the interview panels are keen on implementing the reservations for faculty applications.

The advert says "Without any compromise on qualification, experience and competence, reservation as per Government of India rules."

As there are no perks or concessions/benefits for a candidate from reserved category, I would apply in the general category. As per my experience, with similar credentials, a candidate from general category was given preference over the reserved candidate in the interview.

This is my personal opinion/experience with IITs.

Best wishes

As per my experience, with similar credentials, a candidate from reserved and handicapped category will always be given preference over the general candidate. In fact in two instances, we felt the candidate may not be selected if he was general because we selected them because they are from reserved category. It should be noted that they had good qualifications but did not perform well in the interview.

I gave Skype seminar last year and after repeated mails and telephone calls got a regret letter a few weeks ago. Overall, it took them 6 months to decide. And wherever I have gone for presentations/interview, I have heard mainly bad things about IIT-Jodhpur and its Director.

Has anyone got interview calls from IIT-Mandi against their recent advertisement?

Regarding reservation,
I have also heard from many professors that students from reserved categories are encouraged, also because Institute has to show that it is implementing the policies of government. Don't let these things distract you, just focus on your presentation and interview, and be prepared for technical questions. Best of luck!

Anonymous said...

I have heard that the response from the IITs/IISc for reserved candidates are luke-worm, unless the candidate has extremely good qualifications and publications. I feel that it is better for a candidate to apply in a general category as there are not many substantial benefits for a reserved candidates during the interview. There may be some exceptions, including Giri@iisc experience - as he mentioned in his comment. It would be interesting to see the success ratio for candidates applied under reserved category. I am sure no body will reveal this data.

It would be useful if candidates from reserved candidates share their experience. Sorry if I am deviating from the exact purpose of the blog.

But, I think it is clever strategy (of the Dean's) to reveal the interview schedule as it intimates the unsuccessful candidates indirectly...

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1120821/jsp/nation/story_15877430.jsp#.Vzx1S4QrK8F

There are hardly any reserved faculty members in Indian elite Institutes or central universities.

If you are reserved you reduce your chances of getting hired, no matter how talented you are! It is an open secret. Just like racism in the West, casteism exist in these elite institutes. Perhaps apply under general category and for the benefit of institute you can declare you are from reserved category after your selection (if it is allowed).

Some NITs put short-listed and finally selected candidates.
Does that not breach confidentiality ?

iitmsriram said...

I don't recall making any statement about confidentiality. Anyways, IITM faculty applications portal carries information on shortlisting; as shortlisting progresses, the landing page indicates that information. Accordingly, the login welcome message also changes, informing the candidate " ... have been shortlisted" or "... not shortlisted or shortlisting still in progress". In addition, the shortlisted candidates get the interview call letter / email, of course.

@anon, typical shortlisting teleconference goes over all applications; however, a good fraction are ineligible to be considered (not in advertised area, for example), so these are given only cursory look. The departmental recommendations and access to application materials on the portal are with selection committee members at least a week before the teleconference.

@anon wondering about CS shortlisting, experts were travelling / are travelling, shortlisting will be done only week of 6th June.

Hello Prof. Sriram,

Thanks a bunch for the CS shortlisting update. I will take a week break on checking the faculty recruitment website :) Madness from my part ! :D

@iitmsriram

Thanks for presenting a picture about the selection commiittee proceedings.

Thanks @iitsriram for the updates you are giving us, the prospective faculty.
IITM should be really appreciated for having such able administrators such as Prof. Sriram, who is doing his best to relieve the anxiety of prospective faculty, and Prof. Sriram---via various clarifications---has established trust in prospective faculty applying to IITM. Transparency and empathy seems to at least two virtues (among others) that Dean-Admins. should posess.

Thanks again.

@anon, thanks for those kind words, makes it all seem worthwhile !

Prof. iitmsriram. Thanks for your esteemed service to the prospective faculties in this blog. I observed faculty recruitment for chemistry department in new IITs (PKD/Tirupati) has been deferred. Whether interview takes place against the present advertisement in near future or shortlisting/interview takes place after some new advertisement?.

forget about getting an offer in new IITs. They are recruiting only one faculty in many departments and the retd. faculties show interest to continue their teaching in New IITs.
In chemistry they deferred, may be, the retired faculties would like to continue. Anyways, the bottom line is retired faculties snatch our offer. Also, old IITs, does not encourage to take not beyond Asst.Prof. positions directly.

Easy to float conspiracy theories about retired faculty. In Tirupati and Palakkad, recruitment is limited as the mentor Institute (IITM) does not want to saddle the first regular director with full complement of permanent faculty already in place, leaving little or no room for the new director to project his / her own vision. That way, it is good thing that MHRD is recruiting directors for all the new IITs now itself so that when the academic session starts, they can all hire permanent faculty right away. So, chemistry and other hiring at Palakkad and Tirupati will happen once new directors are in place. (of course, this assumes the new directors will do this ...)

Does anyone got any call from IIT Delhi for final selection (Institute level). Last time I heard that they were waiting for the director to take charge.

@Anon (5:19 PM)
When did you applied there? Was it engineering branch?
Thanks.

Hello Everyone,

I understand that this is a blog space for prospective faculty discussion for IITs and IISc; but can you guide me to the blog where we can discuss about the prospective faculty positions in the top most private universities in India. May be even for prospective faculty joining IITs or IISc, it is worth knowing what are the opportunities available in the private sector.

Regards,

I don't think any blog exists for private universities. Every state has good private universities/institutes - it depends on what you want. If you have a reasonably good research profile, you can negotiate teaching duties. Most of the reputed private universities are giving preference to research-oriented candidates; however they'll expect you to write grants/proposals.

I applied in August, 2015. My area is in pure science.
Hope some other candidates here can provide more info into their status.

Sorry for a small digression from the current topic of discussion.
Is there any update on the new salary structure in IIX after the new pay commission? Just curious.

Anybody got offer letter from IIT Palakkad or IIT Tirupati?

Can one apply for funding through DST schemes (not fellowships) after accepting offer from an IITX but before joining?
