Is it mandatory to have first position throughout or more then 20 publication in peer reviewed journals are enough for getting Inspire interview call..!! Please do reply

saswata said...

@Ankur

Yes. It replaces my normal asst. prof. salary at IIT. As far as I know, IISERs implement a similar scheme as well.

Chris said...

@Ankur,

INSPIRE faculty fellows will/may have teaching duties at IIX depending on the host institute. The INSPIRE fellows in my IIT can guide Ph.D. students, but jointly with another regular faculty.

INSPIRE fellows in my IIT do not get CPDA and LTC. Since I opted for the regular position at IIT, I get these benefits.

Chris

Please answer if research grant from Ramanujan and Inspire could be availed simultaneously?

Anonymous said...

Hello,

Do the Inspire/Ramanujam fellowship stipends adjust for inflation or is it fixed at 75k per month for the entire term? I understand that an IIX prof. salary will adjust for inflation via the DA.

Thanks

Anonymous said...

yeah! 3.3% every year

Anonymous said...

Saswata said...

3.3% for Inspire fellowship, but no annual increment for Ramanujan fellowship. However, DST considers increasing the fellowship amount from time to time. They have done it once, and may do it again in future. No confirmation yet though.

Anonymous said...

DST official clarified that only one research grant could be availed either Ramanujan or inspire. I can understand about fellowship part, but even research grant is not a good thinking of DST

SPENDING MONEY FOR INDIAN SCIENCE

Hello all,

I was just wondering if this is the same situation for everyone. All the institutes IIT including IISc call for interviews but do pay only domestic travel in some cases this is also not possible. So in the sense the candidate needs to spend money from his pocket for Science jobs. India boasts itself as unperturbed economy though lots gone in to big politicians fridge. The only point I want to make is we need to spend considerable amount to attend an interview. from abroad. I feel that because institutes are not obliged to pay they call most of the candidates who apply from Abroad. This is not the case either in the UK or US. Why not Indian institutes follow the same system, following a strategic science approach. I think we need to think on this topic too.

Chris said...

@ Anon June 1, 2012 10:36 PM and SM,
Yes, I agree with you that the research grant from both Inspire and Ramanujan can be provided to the faculty.

Although it is possible to avail external grants (MPI partner group, HSFP, etc.) along with R-fellowship grants, it is not possible to avail two DST grants.

Regards,
Chris

Ankur Kulkarni said...

@Chris - so if one gets INSPIRE or Ramanujan, one cannot write proposals to DST for any other projects? Do you know what the reason for such a restriction is?

@Saswata - for CS theory type work, what sources of funding do you obtain?

Anonymous said...

You could attract funding from DST in the form of extramural grants, but Inspire and Ramanujan are fellowships so they cannot be granted at the same time.

Saswata said...

@Ankur

One can apply for DST fast track, DIT funds and industry funds. I personally get funded by Ramanujan fellowship only.

Chris said...

@Ankur,
As an anon already mentioned, you can apply for normal DST grants even if you are a Ramanujan or Inspire fellow. In addition, you can apply to other agencies (DBT, DRDO, etc.) also for grants.

Regarding different grants/fellowships, have a look at http://indiabioscience.org/grants/grants-in-india . Although the site if for people in biosciences, most of the grants are also applicable for non-bio people.

Chris

What is the usual shortlist to selection %?

It is usually 90%+ in IISc.

Anon @Jun7, 9:59 pm states "At least now I know that my application has reached them"; really, what confirmation do you need for uploading applications online, especially when you can see what all you have uploaded, even now? Uploaded materials are used for processing applications, we ask for signed paper copy only for records.

iitmsriram said...

"Call" letters are only call letters, no regret letters. Shortlist to selection 90% means there is no shortlisting, shortlisting IS selection. Historically, IITM shortlist to selection ratio is around 3:1.

I had a question about the rules that I was looking for a clarification on. I think I had asked this question before, but I am unable to locate in the previous posts. My question is: if an IIT faculty visits abroad during the summer vacation and is paid an honorarium for the visit, does one have to forego the IIT salary? If there are variables involved, I would appreciate if someone could answer as to under what circumstances do you get paid the IIT salary.

Anonymous said...

"At least now I know that my application has reached them"

@Sriram:

Let me first clarify that I did not (do not) want to criticize or question the way IITM (and you) handle the applications in any way. Secondly let me state that I am highly appreciative (not that it matters) of the new web based application system for IITM that I saw yesterday!

Now for my earlier comment: I applied sometime in October/November by sending an email to you and to the head of the concerned department separately, (and it was very time consuming to fill all the forms and then generating a hard copy of the same!), and since then not heard a thing from IITM till a few days back. I must emphasize that I am extremely thankful to IITM for "shortlisting me".

Now regarding the application, "acknowledgement of the application" is an important piece of 'document' which works to improve the transparency of the whole process. That was my only point. Another important point in this regard, is the timeline. Since there was no response, to application (either from you or from the HOD), there was no window left for asking about a timeline for the whole process.

7-8 months since I sent my applications, is a decent timescale (even for the process of faculty hiring) and I have had a few offers in that time and have committed to one IIX. Now even if IITM may have been a higher priority for me in the beginning of be application process, I cannot consider the "interview offer" for IITM.

with utmost regards for you and IITM.

Anonymous said...

I just wanted to share that IITM received 220 applications in Physics! Is it not a huge number! It's Unimaginable that there are so many Doctorates without a good job!

Hello NR,

Which faculty do you belong?

Anonymous said...

the selection committee meeting at IISc is on June 14?

Anonymous said...

@Ankur 12.01 pm, as long as it is purely "honorarium" and you have enough earned leave, you will be paid salary @ IIT. It is better to ensure that the invitation letter clearly mentions that the remuneration is purely an "honorarium".

Sridhar

iitmsriram said...

Dear anon@12:03 pm June 8, my post was purely about the online applications. IITM has two distinct hiring modes, against a standing advertisement and against a dated advertisement. We currently have a dated advertisement going - this has fixed and shorter time line. The ad came out in April, the interview call letters have gone out (end of May/ early June), the interviews are in June / July and the offer letter will go out around July 20. The standing advertisement has no fixed time line. All applications received against the standing advertisement are handled by the respective departments at their own time scales. It would appear that the department decided to include your old application into the current timed advertisement pool. I had requested the departments to write to any holdover candidates asking for an updated application to be submitted against the dated advertisement and this appears not to have been done in your case. Offers for applications received against standing advertisement take 2-3 months if the departments act quickly.

Ankur Kulkarni said...

Thanks Sridhar.
Could you help me with the following: how does calculate earned leave? Suppose one joins IIT on Jan 1st, when does the period of "vacation" (which can be utilised for this travel) begin and how much earned leave is accumulated by then?

Anonymous said...

Ankur,

Earned leave is something you accumulate when you work during summer holidays. Normally if you work during 3months of summer (90 days) you will acquire 30 days. if you join in January you will not accumulate any until you work on summer holidys!

Anonymous said...

@Ankur and @anon June 9, 2012 12:14 AM

EL/Vacation works this way:
The insitute declares a period of vacation (during summer and winter) which is usually a subset of vacation declared for the typical student. You can take 60 days vacation leave.
If you do not take vacation leave, you get 30 days earned leave which can be accumulated. If you take partial vaction, the number of EL gets reduced proporationally.

AFAIK, for new recruits, first year vaction is calculated proportionalately. So, if you were to join on 1st Jan and vacation period starts from 15th May, you will get less than 30 days vacation.

In addition, there is something called Half pay leave which can be used for such visits. This accrues @10 days for every six months of service.

e.g, in my case, I joined on 31st July and took off during the next summer using a combination of vacation and half pay leave.

If after all this, you still don't have leave left, you can go on leave without pay.
These are rules as implemented here
hth,

Sridhar

anon said...

@Ankur, Earned leave is 'earnable' only after probation period. So first year summer will not count. But usually traveling abroad for conferences, etc is not a problem and is considered on duty. If you are going for months together, you need to check how it works.

Unknown said...

@ankur, @vishu, @anon_june_9

Afaik, this is how EL/vacation works.

A subset the summer and winter break (that is declared for the typical student) is declared as vacation. One is allowed to take 60 days as vacation. If one doesn't take off during this vacation period, 30 days earned leave is credited to your service record. EL can be accumulated/carried forward/encashed subject to rules.
If one takes some days off during vacation, the period of EL accrued is proportionately reduced.

Newly joined faculty get proportional vacation off. I don't know the exact calculations.

In addition, there is something called Half pay leave which you earn @10 days for 6 months of service.

E.g, I joined on 31st July and took two months off the next summer using a combination of vacation and earned leave, while still on probation.

Any shortfall can be made up with loss of pay.

hth,

Sridhar

Ankur Kulkarni said...

Thanks Sridhar and Vishu. I just need a bit of clarification on what the EL is necessary for. If one has to visit abroad for, say two months, does that in itself require having two months of EL accumulated? Or does getting paid the IIT salary during that time require the EL?

And finally, can one make a case that such a visit is part of duty, since one would be visiting for research purposes?

Dear all inspire aspirants specially @ Ankur and Chris,

I am also among inspire aspirants - 2012 and need small clarification.

The problem is while applying for the fellowship, I defined generalized objectives which contained three major objectives. But, now at the time of presentation, if i do small changes in objectives of the study (as my prospective host institute suggesting), will it be accepted by the interview committee or I should be specific to the proposal which i have sent along with the application.

please do reply

@ Ankur

I have yet not received any email fro insa but could see my name in the list of shortlisted candidates.

could you please suggest how many slides would be enough for presentation.

amit said...

@suggestion

The presentation is for 15 minutes, so I guess 10 slides should be adequate. (In fact in the interview email they mentioned that the number of slides should not be more than 15.)

Quote from the letter:
" In order to help the experts to come to a decision, the Committee has decided to invite you to make a personal presentation of 15 minutes duration. It will be followed by a discussion for 15 minutes. In this presentation you are expected to briefly present the highlights of your PhD thesis work and discuss the research proposal. In particular, you may emphasize the novelty of the proposed work. Power Point facility would be available. You may limit the number of slides to about 15.

You are also requested to bring along one set of your research publications for the reference of the committee and for Academy records. Please request your PhD thesis supervisor to send a letter of recommendation so as to reach the undersigned at least a week before the date of presentation. "

best wishes,

@suggestion:

I succefully appeared for last years inspire fellowship. IMO, it does not matter how you change your objectives in your presentation as long as it is on the same topic that you wrote your project! I appeared for online interviews and even they did not want to see my slides. They expected me just to tell them. Since I needed some figures to explain I insisted on showing my slides. I heard from another candidate that she did not show her slides....Last time they mostly judged your overall understanding of the subject. I doubt, though I maybe wrong, the experts have thoroughly read and assimilated your project!

Ankur Kulkarni said...

Anon June 12, 2012 2:06 PM:
See this follow-up memo. It extends the memo you mentioned to autonomous bodies also. Besides I read in the news that the austerity drive has been extended to IITs.
http://www.finmin.nic.in/the_ministry/dept_expenditure/notification/emre/ExpMan_EcoMeasure05062012.pdf

iitmsriram said...

Ankur is correct, the second memo extends the austerity measures including 10% expenditure cut etc to IITs and other autonomous bodies. However, this will not have a major effect as the main expenditure on this head is salaries and pensions which are excluded from the cut. There will be a cut in the budget available for travel, purchase of consumables and the like. There is a bar on creation of posts, but faculty posts already exist and are vacant, so faculty hiring will not be affected but this will affect hiring on the non-teaching side. IITs have already been asked to bring down ratio of non-teaching staff to faculty, so there is a bar on creation of non-teaching posts anyway.

Chris said...

@suggestion,
1. It should be no problem to do small changes in your objectives as long as you stick to the main proposal submitted earlier.
2. About 15(+/-3) slides should be sufficient to cover 15 min and for them to get an idea about you, your research and future goals.
3. Next 15 min will be a discussion where your depth of understanding, capabilities to perform the work, novelty, feasibility, etc. will be examined. You just need to talk without (wasting their time by) referring to your slides.
4. Clarify from INSA about your exact time slot. If you have a flight to catch, request for an alternative time slot.

Best wishes,
Chris

I had a question for the younger newly joined IIX faculty. Have any of you thought of or tried to hire a post-doc? I know that a post-doc at an IIX is not all that attractive an option for a new Ph.D., but it may serve someone well in the short run. Presumably there would be several doctorates at your IIX who have finished but are in the limbo waiting for jobs or for post-docs abroad; these guys may be good to work with as post-docs, especially if they are from allied areas and are of similar age as you. Has anyone considered hiring them, even if for a short duration?

Chris said...

@suggestion,
I had already shared my INSPIRE interview experiences in detail in an earlier post. You can search using some key words (inspire, chris, etc.). Let me know if you have any questions after seeing that.

@Ankur,
Here is an option to be an SRA in CSIR scientists' pool scheme (http://csirhrdg.res.in/Hindisraform.pdf), but not applicable for fresh PhDs.

Regards,
Chris

Ankur Kulkarni said...

@Chris: The link you sent seems to be for those who are looking for positions. I was wondering if any one, as a junior faculty, has hired a post-doc.

Anonymous said...

Most of the Junior faculty won't be having funds to support postdocs. Other option is to take students who has some funding of their own (like the Nehru PDF). But then they most propbably opt some senior faculty who can support their career better. I don't think there is anything wrong with hiring somebody as a postdoc.

Anonymous said...

IITs have TA and RA funds to support PhD students. At the moment there is nothing similar for postdocs. So the PDFs need to come with their own funding. You can hire new PhDs as project assistants if you have a project (I was a project assistant for a few months at IISc between my PhD and postdoc).

-Another_new_faculty

-Another_new_faculty states "At the moment there is nothing similar for postdocs."; IITM has institutional post doc program including a separate one for women scientists. Look up IITM web site for details. The scheme has been running for a few years now.
